    What is a batter?

That would be a slope to the folks on the top side of the world.

have you got any 'rails' to work too?...who is setting it out?...check with the engineer someone must know the angles of the batter. but don't try to guess it keep in touch and i will try to help you.If you are using a tilt bucket you should be able to sit on the batter and pull it.

The batter is 4:1. 12 metres out and 3 metres Down. I am trying to pull the batter sideways but as I bring bucket towards me one of the corners of the bucket always digs in. Whether I curl the bucket in or out and whether I tilt bucket side to side, I just can't get it right. It always leaves holes from the corner of the bucket digging in. I can sit on top of batter and pull up and pull down a batter but cannot pull sideways. Also on different note. Cutting house pads. What's the best technique using an excavator. Work from the 4 corners towards middle or start at one corner and work back and the move accross. Thankyou note: batter aka slope

It sounds as if your not keeping up with (ajusting your angle) the tilt, as your getting closer to the machine, towards the end of your pass. You my want to shorten your strokes.

Sounds like a matter of hand/eye coordination in being able to adjust the tilt of the bucket as you pull it in, practice makes perfect as the old saying goes.

Is your excavator able to run the twist bucket while running the swing motor? Some excavators steal oil for the auxiliary from the swing.

Yeah mate I can twist bucket while slewing.

it is all hand and eye coordination and practice dont get greedy when cutting close to the finished angle a little at a time easy to take it off than put back plus have a practice some where it is going to be dug up practice makes perfect and cutting flat pads every job is different stop and have a look and think about which is the best way to do it work smarter not harder

    4:1 slope.........use a dozer

The one tilt bucket I used was controlled by a foot control. You could not make small adjustments with it. It would seem that the tilt should be like a bucket control- very precise. This would make the task easier. After struggling with the task a more experienced operator got on it and easily did a very nice job. More precise controls would help but in the end it comes down to seat time and experience!

In addition to the above post. I have seen excavators with the bucket tilt on a toggle slider on the right joystick instead of foot pedal on floor. Is it possible to change the tilt operation to the hand toggle switch elimanating the foot pedal. If it is possible, how hard is it to do. Thanyou

Practice, practice, practice..... As some one else said try using shorter stroke, also you have to be right on with the bucket angle as well... When you get the hang of it you will know. I have pulled the slope to myself at a 45 deg. but I prefer to try and stay straight in line.

G'day Bamgene . I must admit I hate doing batters. As has already been said "Dont be in a hurry, a little at a time", a little each time is better than having to go back and repair a f#*kup. Practise does make perfect eventually - my father taught me thats its like slicing hard cheese "Thin slice and adjust after each pass" and you should then always have control of the shape. Just my 2cents worth.

if your tilt bucket is to fast in the tilt it makes any job hard, you can slow it down by reducing the flow. ive seen it done by brasing up the fitting and redrilling a smaller hole on the tilt bucket hoses. i find it better to have a slower tilt to keep your work neet. good luck with your batters.

Try this mate Try this, I'm a gps operator and its tought me the best way to cut them, first always cut with your tilt bucket cutting edge striaght up and down not with the floor of your bucket flat, its easier to keep the level on your edge up and down than to crowd your bucket in and out to get the level cut. put your bucket right out with edge down at the desired angle, now as you pull the batter towards you slowly crowd your bucket out, as you meet your machine with your bucket you should nearly be fully crowded out. do this at every pull just be sure to have the bucket the right angle (batter profile) at the start of each pull, the reason for this is that the dynamics of the way the edge works when crowding out and pulling in is that the cutting edge will stay at the exact same angle as you set at the start of pulling towards u, also when pulling batter sideways start from the top (hinge point) and cut down (to the toe), and don't try and trim on the first cut always cut of the excess to get shape than you can trim to get final product, hope this helps

Bamgene, this might sound daft, but what excavator are you using?? do you have the mode control on the correct setting for fine trimming, the times I go to excavators with "Hydraulic Faults" only to find the mode switch set for loading out trucks at Max power, the job they are tring to do is level stone etc to Bone, as soon as I set things on the correct mode and show the Driver how its done, I always get some load of rubbish verbs as to the fact that the machine is faulty some how ???, if the arm speed is set in-correct the tilt bucket will have the better of you all day long, the U.K. speck for sorting Batter's is tidy the top (high side) bulk out (dig) the big bit you dont need, then dig out the Toe (foot) of the batter, so you can see were you are heading, then just dig off everything that does not look like a Batter. check you mode control tctractors
