Hydraulic Oil Made from Recycled Oil

Sumeet · 2023-01-10 00:34

Does anyone have any insight or experience whether using AW46 Hydraulic Oil made from recycled oil causes any increased wear or issues with component life/longevity. I have excavators and the cheapest source for oil right now is from a company that makes it from recycled oil. I want to know whether it is worth spending the extra 50% cost on new hydraulic oil (not made from recycled oil).

That sounds like a terrible way to save money. Hydraulic components are expensive.

I'm not sure if all new oil is 100% new. There is lot's of recycled oil though. I think a cleanliness level would be a better way to determine if an oil is suitable. What brand is the recycled oil you are considering? I think if it's from a major oil company could OK. A recycled oil might go through more filtering than new oil to ensure it meets specs.

A costumer of mine bought two barrels of recycled hydraulic oil from a local company who had bought said oil in bulk and rebranded it in there name. He put the recycled oil in both his diggers 200 work hours later the hydraulic pump in his 210 exploded into a thousand pieces. When I removed the pump and drained the system there was a dark sludge coating on all hydraulic components Inc tank walls solenoids etc. Found same dark sludge in second machine. Flushed out both machines new filters all new oil. Two months later his 135 had the hydraulic pump rebuild due to hugely advanced wear in the pump for the hours that were on the machine. His words were it was a very expensive lesson, to try save himself 200 euros by buying recycled oil over good quality oil it cost him over 10000 euros. I am not saying all recycled oil it bad but the stuff he got certainly was. Is it would taking the chance on it

Recycled oil was pretty common when hydraulic pumps and motors worked through gears and vanes. Once the industry went to variable flow piston pumps and piston motors, the issues of oil cleanliness and additives became a deal breaker for recycled oil products in hydraulic systems. Recycling of oils for hydraulic systems can be done but where is that point where the processing of that oil costs more than just purchasing virgin stock from the refinery. We aren't there yet but that day is coming.

In my market, off-spec, contaminated, used and flush hydraulic oil gets sold as refined burner oil. Sold to local asphalt plants or shipped to Tacoma, Wa. I don’t know what the price is today. It’s normally just enough to cover the 40’ conex shipping cost to Tacoma and get it out of my hair.

Lol no, not at all a good idea. We dump all kinds of nasty oil in the waste oil tank. And the Safety Kleen guy adds 150 gallons of waste coolant to it as well when he pumps that out after he pumps the oil out.

if you cant afford new oil, you cant afford new pumps.

I've seen the sludge and like a dark brown varnish too on a bunch of big balers that were run on some flavor or recycled hydro. Even through they were just gear pumps they still didn't like it. Kills me that people spend $$$,$$$ on equipment the use the cheapest oil, grease, run straight water in the cooling system then get upset when the mechanic bill is high lol

I always try to have some sympathy for our customers, especially our smaller customers when it comes to repair costs on equipment BUT my sympathy ends when willful neglect, willful abuse, and willful stupidity occur.

I understand all these principles. I bought a Samsung se240 for 5k w no tracks and hour meter stopped along time ago. probably has 30k plus. was ran in a old scrap yard and was abused daily by unfit operators literally full throttle all day. had bad hydro leak so they used used motor oil. can u believe that? Ive Flushed it 4 times now and still get hundreds of hours a year out if her as my backup machine? im sure the pump is going but still works, also i got a spare pump and spare 210 punp so going to find a good local shop and get the 240 pump built so when it goes im ready? My baby my beautiful pride and joy Komatsu pc300 lc7 i mainly perfectly says use ase 10-30 motor oil and local dealer said sae 30wt? any thoughts and also whats best for my Samsung ive flushed and used the cheapest stuff at the tractor store thus far. But last week i got a free few skids of different oils. all different weights 32 46 68?

10 weight motor oil or 32 hydraulic oil are pretty common. They are the same weight just use a different scale.

A drum of new aw46 is 800 bucks or so. Whew those Rexroth pumps are spendy. Cheap insurance imo.
