Ride struts is what alot of people call them in mining. They work amazing well. You can have a 240 ton (and much larger) truck traveling on roads with some large pot holes and dips and feels like riding in boat in cab. The struts do a good job of taking the shock and not transfering them to the frame or operator.

Basically, they work like most shocks on cars. There is a nitrogen charge at the top with oil. when the strut is compressed it forces the oil through orifices and compresses the nitrogen. This slows down the movement. When extending it used bigger orifices to speed up the extension. The front struts also are the kingpins that the wheel pivots on. Here is a strut that i replace after it was rebuilt. When it was built it is filled with an exact amount of oil. It then gets charged with nitrogen to extend the the rod to the dimensions specified. This is done after shipping to the job site and the truck is complete. You can see the fill valve on the top front.

Here's another ride strut, (rear) just on a little bigger truck. I was told that the Hydrair name is owned by Komatsu.
