bchand220 · 2019-09-29 11:13

I’m looking for recommendations where to buy fuel injectors for my Volvo trackhoe other than the dealership.

The engine sounds like Duetz suggest give your dealer a try. Kind regards Uffex

I’ve talked to them but my dealer is an absolute last resort for me. That’s why looking for other options at this time. Thanks

Ok Bchand You have tried Volvo CE - Duetz lets explore other possibilities may I ask wha is the problem with the injectors is it that they need service ?

  4. #4bchand2202019-09-29 13:48

Getting a lot of black smoke especially when under a load. Replaced air filters, checked turbo, checked boots, leaning towards injectors. Anything else it could be?

  5. #5uffex2019-09-29 14:29

The inlet manifold is free of oil ? - any smell of fuel in the sump ? - how may hours has the engine ?- valve stem oil seals are a possibility - much crank case compression ? -if the injectors are over dosing the pots I would expect that the oil would become diluted with fuel. The injectors as to the best of my knowledge are a Bosch part you may get the repaired serviced at one of there outlets. Sorry if I sound negative but the injectors are the last part of the fuel chain if they are in trouble there is a strong possibility that the rest of the fuel system has equal wear. We have some information on that engine and will try to help more if we can is that a Ec210B we are talking ? Kind regards Uffex

    The Engine has just under 4K hours. It’s a 2006 EC160BLC.

  7. #7bchand2202019-09-29 15:14

Im not sure about any oil in the sump. Seems to run fine except for the smoke.

  8. #8uffex2019-09-29 16:52

Thats not so many hours the engine should be good are there any errors coming up on the display regarding the crankshaft sensor ? Please see attached check it out. Kind regards Uffex

  9. #9uffex2019-09-29 16:58

I omitted to mention that if the Turbo was not making good pressure it will result in smoke under load if you have the possibility please check the pressure under load. Check the muffler is not choked as this will have a negative effect on the turbo performance.

No codes for crankshaft sensor on display. What do I need to look at specifically on the attached?

  11. #11uffex2019-09-29 17:10

Oops sorry I overlooked the attachment

    Update

Uffex has provided really good info. How did you check the turbo? Just looking for oil or did you check the integrity of the shaft from the exhaust side to the intake side? Did you check your charged air cooler for cracks? How about the wastegate, if its equipped? Does it always smoke or just under snap throttle? Lots of things to peek at before fuel. Hope this helps you save a few bucks.

Did the machine get smokey all of a sudden or over a few hundred hours ? Has anybody been near the fuel system in recent times ?

Yes checked the turbo from exhaust side and intake side as well. We took off piping and looked at everything. We checked 2 boots up top and they were ok but I have one more to check I found down low on the backside of the engine. Haven’t checked charge air cooler or wastegate (not sure where they are). It has smoked some a bluish smoke since I bought it (bought used about 200hrs ago). But within the last 50 hrs or so Noticed more black smoke and more of it. Still a little blue when first crank, and some smoke when running, but severest when under a load. Attaching a pic of it working recently.

See my reply to please see my reply to funwithfuel. No one has been near the fuel system since I’ve had it (about 200hrs) other than changing fuel filters twice since had it.

I would recommend you check and or drain the charge air cooler of any oil. I would also check the injectors for correct orientation. If installed 180 degrees out they will spray outside the chamber in the piston and smoke badly. You could have blown an injector tip off which is not uncommon especially if you have had water in the fuel. Does the turbo turn freely without contacting the compressor or turbine hosing? Toy could always pull the injectors from the cylinder head and have them tested at a fuel injection shop. Much cheaper than a set of new injectors.

That's lack of boost. There should be a plug in the air horn feeding the intake. If you can, see if you can plug a gauge in there. You wanna see no less than 18-20 psi full throttle under load. If you are seeing less, your lacking boost.

  20. #20GregsHD2019-09-29 22:26

I ran into this same issue on an EC210B, the owner was thinking injectors also. It had a major boost leak, they have six individual intake manifold gaskets, some of them **** out. I can't remember if I could see the leaks or not, if you can see down to where the manifold meets the head check for oil residue, may even see a gasket or two hanging out.

Yes turbo turns freely without contact. I’ll try these things and post an update soon as possible. Thanks for everyone’s help!

Good day The smoke appears more of burnt oil and that of unburnt fuel, those engines that have injector overdose will smell of fuel out the muffler when loaded. I suggest that exploring the possibilities of lube oil getting into the pots is the way to go. If you can of course smell unburnt fuel when loaded would change the idea. Maybe exploring the previous history might be worthwhile if you are only 200 hours down the road it would sound as if the issue was there when you took ownership. Kind regards Uffex

Our Ec290BLC was doing that. Ended up being the rubber connector on the bottom of the turbo has slipped off a little. Put it back on and tightened it up. Good to go!

Good point, the rigid pipe that the joint hose connects to has a tendency to break loose from the block, verify that that pipe is not swinging in the breeze.

  25. #25Delmer2019-09-30 11:54

If you don't find an obvious leak, there is a procedure for pressure testing the intake system. Basically plug the air filter opening with plastic. Then pressurize the system, it's much easier to find the leak without the engine running! plus you usually don't have much boost at idle, and don't want to be in there at full load!

So update...took out injectors and had tested. 1 bad, rest they said weak. Replaced all with new and still smoking. I checked intercooler and piping for leaks with 15psi thru the plug at bottom pipe and holds psi. So took Off turbo and took in to shop and they said it’s in great shape. So, at this point My mechanic and I are stumped. One guy at the turbo shop said he’s seen it take several runtime hours to quit smoking after injectors are replaced or possibly soot buildup in muffler has to burn off. Anyone heard of those possibilities?? Also had someone tell my mechanic that the valves could be issue if dirt somehow got in there thru the air filter. Gonna check those and see in a couple of days.

Have you verified boost? If so the next step is to Pull the exhaust manifold. Easy peasy. Plug the oil supply to turbo and let her run. If you got one or more holes slobbering oil, might wanna prep to pull the valve cover and run the valves. I doubt it will help, but it can't hurt. Yes, if you've been dumping fuel , it may take an hour of hard work to clear up the combustion chambers, you need heat and boost. Those mufflers will hold oil, but your turbo is dry, no need to look at muffler. Have you inspected the intake manifold gaskets as suggested. Those little rascals fail quite often. Did you Inspect your preheated element and its insulators? Commonly overlooked fault there. Good luck

Good day One aspect often overlooked is that of the intercooler after a period of time residue can build up - there is a drain plug so that you may easily check it out. Kind regards Uffex

Good day Ivan Sorry for the Swedish but I guess you can use Babblefish Kind regards Uffex
