International 260A Oil priming

CaptainAnalyzer ยท 2016-04-07 14:24

Hello all, I have an international 260A backhoe with a D239 engine that we have just completed a major overhaul in, and for the life of us we cannot get the oil pump to prime, and I refuse to start it with no oil pressure. So far we've tried over filling the crankcase, putting a little bit of pressure to the crankcase while cranking, cracking the oil filter loose, and checking for any suction leaks, all to no avail. Anyone with more experience please chime in. The engine manual that we have mentioned an update by drilling a 1/16" vent in the front cover where the oil pump mounts to aid in priming. Anyone have any experience with it? Thank you all in advance. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

If you pressurize the crankcase, crack open the oil filter, or better yet, the oil pressure sender or something at the end of the line.

What about temporarily overfilling the crankcase above the level of the oil pump and letting it sit overnight or a weekend with oil filter off, plugs out, etc.

Brothers, we have tried both of these bush mechanic techniques. Going at it again in about an hour. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Another trick I've used is filling a pump up garden sprayer with engine oil , remove & adapt hose to an oil galley and prime away . http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200596645_200596645

Ok , got it . Your just cranking the engine over with battery waiting for oil pressure to build . Assuming rods & mains were pre lubed on the overhaul I would go ahead & fire it up . Bring it up to 1,500 RPM & see if it builds oil pressure . My IH TD 25C dozer is like that if it sets awhile . Quick snap up to mid to high range RPM's cures it .

The update where a vent hole is to be drilled is for a later model engine. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Did you just start it and let the chips fall where they may? Or do something else that brought up oil pressure while cranking first?

Yes. Used a pressure bleeding tank connected to the oil pressure sending hole, gave it 15psi of oil from the tank and once we saw oil at the filter, tightened it up and connected the shut off solenoid. Such a relief when I saw the gauge sweep right! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

That sure makes you feel better seeing the needle move .

Hi all just picked up a IH 260a backhoe was hoping that someone could give me the hydro trans filter number as well as main hydraulic filter number! Want to replace but can't seem to find any numbers for the filters

Main Hydraulic filter located at the right side of the floorboard under a plate. Fleetguard number HF-6081 Trans filter I have no idea.
