jcb 3d111, removing 498nt engine

micah ยท 2009-07-27 19:14

this may sound stupid but i took the bell housing bolts out and i can move the engine about a 1/2 an inch but that is all , i can see a bolt in where the started came out on the fly wheel im thinking that bolts the fly wheel to converter but it dont line up with the hole where the starter came off to get the bolts out, there is a plate on the very bottom of the bell housing, facing the ground took it off and can see the back of converter and there are 10 to 12 millimeter bolts all around the edge of the converter , if i take all of them out will that let the engine lose and slide out of the bell housing, i dont want to take out the wrong thing apart and have a mess , and mess up my converter, thanks the help would be great if any one knows

Hi there micah Id say those bolts are the flexi plate bolts for sure and you will need to remove them! A Jcb 3D111, Not many of them on here, we,ve got a 3D11 (its in sorry shape at the minitue, been parked for a while) I intend to overhaul it some time, when time and money allouds it! Why you removing the engine? Would love to see a few pictures!

I agree with cps, leave the converter there whenever possible. I only remember one design of converter, that stays with the tranny and that's on an Allison I had. The converter will have a locating 'snub' that slides into the crankshaft , so gently pry the converter back, once unbolted, if you can. Check the flex plate for cracks and the converter seal for leakage. Phil

Hey Micah, I'm just down the road from you in Parkersburg, WV. Shoot me an email and I can hook you up with a 25+ year JCB veteran down in KY. He's got tons of info. Chad [email protected]

when i got the jcb the head was missing, it had been removed about 10 years ago, oil was put in the cylinders and left that way with the hood down , the man passed away and his wife she is(72) sold it to me as is for 2,000 us, so i need to rebuild it and get a complete head with injectors, intake and exaust and mufler and as complete rebuild kit

  5. #5willie592009-08-02 11:19

Whoa, what happened to the rest of the parts? If the fellow took the head off (for whatever reason) there should be some parts laying around somewhere. Head, intake, exhaust, muffler. I know she sold it to you "as is", but there are parts for that machine somewhere that are useless to her and necessary for you.

well i spent 2 days over there looking for them and never found them , there is just so much stuff there to look through, you would have to see what i mean lol

i will get it done some time, looks like im gona have to take the rods off the crank in order to get the flywheel to turn to get the bolts out of the converter, i dont know of any other way to get them out being the engine is locked up, or at least i think its the engine that is locked up i hope it is not the trany or converter or pump , you see there is no way to tell i got it the way it is , does any one know if it is posable for the converter or trany pump to lock up, i tryed to move the flywheel by sticking a big screw driver in the hole where the starter was and pry up on the flywheel teeth and it is locked up , it is 10.15 pm here im am going to take the botom of the engine apart in the morning , im off all this week so i have time

  12. #12willie592009-08-03 22:24

I'm kinda thinking along with what phil said earlier; reckon' you can pull the engine with the convertor attached to the flex plate? Then you can work on getting everything turning with the engine out.

  13. #13micah2009-08-03 22:35

i have tryed to get the engine out but it will only move about a half an inch , i was thinking that the converter would come out like on some cars , with it conected to the flywheel but it dont seem to want to and i dont want to force it and mess something up.

  14. #14micah2009-08-03 22:40

i would love to get a repare manual on it so i can see how it comes apart and how to rebuild it by specks

  15. #15micah2009-08-03 22:42

will let you know tuesday eve how things went lol

Hi Micah, I see your getting some helpfull advise and from a lot closer to home. ian.

  17. #17Phil2009-08-04 06:44

I'm sure you will find a manual somewhere for it, much of this info is available on-line now. I think you are taking the right approach, better to be cautious. Many JCBs in Europe I believe. I have heard of many ways to free up stuck, rusted pistons, even coke as I recall. If you do a search on ACMOC forum, much restoration goes on there. A long pry bar on the ring gear teeth is your best spot. Phil

  18. #18cps2009-08-04 13:22

Micah, I have a manual on CD some where, i'll try and upload it and send it to you! Only thing is im not sure if its for a torque converter model, maybe manual tranny only! prob has both not sure! like i said i'l try and send it to you!

  19. #19micah2009-08-04 18:04

well the engine is out ,and i found out why it was locked up, the crank moves from front to back about 1/4 to 1/2 and inch, to much end play , and the bolts on the flywheel were catching on the back of the engine, i dont have the engine apart yet to see what damage there is to the crank or block, and cps if you can find the shop manual for it i sure would like to thank you

  20. #20Phil2009-08-05 05:53

Thrust bearing damage is not good, your engine block is probably okay, but your crankshaft may not be. Although a crankshaft grinder may be able to repair the thrust flange, I'm not sure about that. Torque converter problems are usually the cause of thrust bearing failure. You might want to consider buying a complete rebuildable engine for the parts that you might need. Finding a privately owned wreck is the cheapest way to get parts sometimes. Phil

well the jcb work is on hold , i just spent the money i was going to use to work on it with , but i just could not pass up this deal, 6= john deere b,s for 2,000 and 2 of them are 1939 models with spoke rims hand start and them 2 run, other 4 are el start they need some work but the 1939 s just need tires and paint but who could pass them up all 6 for 2,000 here is a pic of one of the 1939 s

  26. #26speedbuff2009-08-25 08:13

re brockhouse If your jcb is a shuttle shift there are 2 bolts one on top of the bell housing and one at the bottom at the 6 and 12 oclock position about 2inches from the edge of the bell housing they are installed to retain the converter so it does not come out with the flywheel if conventionally removal is used they must be removed with a seized engine this will allow you to remove the coverter and flywheel as an assembly hope this helps may be able to post some pics if nessary regards speedbuff

  27. #27speedbuff2009-08-26 08:03

re jcb Sorry I replied to page one of the thread I see you have the engine out. It will be a leyland diesel used in nuffield and british leyland tractors parts here in southern ontario canada are easy to get that power your backhoe.if you give me the serial number i might be able to help you find out exactly what engine it is it acan be found on the block deck just outside the cylinder head at the rear corner it will start with either 498/ ..... or 38t... let me know This link might be of some use www.thenuffieldandleylandtractorclub.co.uk hope this helps :drinkup

  28. #28carogator2009-08-26 09:47

try removing the inspection plate on the bottom og bell housing and then the converter should be able to slide forward. the plate effectively closes off the hole like 1/3 of a jar lid. hth

sorry . i did the same thing. end of first page.
