JD 450 Steering Problems

hvy 1ton ยท 2010-03-30 16:01

I was working with the 450 this morning and lost steering in the right stick, like the clutch came out of adjustment. I as i backed up to head up to the shop there was a really loud squeal or whine coming from below me. Not real sure of the sound but it was loud and nasty;i heard it over the engine and my hearing protectors. I have adjusted the right steering clutch/brake 3 times in the last 6 months and the left one has been fine every time I've checked it. The dozer has powersteering, but i'm pretty sure that isn't part of the problem. Time to dig into the service manual again. :Banghead Any suggestions?

Well, that was easy to find. 210-20-1 Incomplete Disengagement -Clutch and brake linage out of adjustment -Pressure plate warped, cracked or excessively worn -Pressure plate release lever,k pivot pins or bracket worn -Pressure and auxiliary springs damaged, weak or rusty -Clutch pack plates and facings warped, excessively worn or burred. Is there any way to check the last four with tearing the tractor completely apart?

Hi ..I am having similar probs with a 450c crawler loader. Right side is very touchy, sometimes very smooth then really gotta really pull right lever. I am moving heavy red clay on a hill in here in Michigan. First of the week, had went to bottom of a hill, worked great, started back up hill...SMOKE, heavy smoke. Shut her down almost to top of hill, sitting on a 30* slope. Started next day moved about 15' smoke returned..stopped again, still on smaller slope. Restarted, then engine quit. Changed fuel filter reprimed, nada wont start. My son in law's brother is heavy equipment repair shop owner, is coming out to look when he gets some time. Sorry didn't mean to hijack thread

Have you tried adjusting the clutch/brake assembly? If you don't have the manual on how to do it i can scan it and send it to you. On a side note, tie a sting to whatever you stick down in there to adjust it. Getting a wrench back out of the steering housing is a lot harder than dropping it in.:Banghead As far as i can tell there is something wrong with my right side pressure plate/clutch pack and they only way to tell whats wrong is tear the whole right side apart from the sprocket on in. Lowboy will be here on monday to take it to Murphy Tractor.:bash Oh, what color was the smoke? Blue or Black?

white smoke can be an injector problem or a general lack of fuel getting to the cylinder. That would go right along with your loss of power.

I have had white smoke at idle before and it was the injectors that were bad. But didn't have a lose of power... Jay

Should have mentioned, heavy smoke was from transmission. Pulled floor plates can't see any smoke stains. Will be checking out more of it today. Thanks, Mike
