Swamp rat ยท 2012-10-20 10:18

Good morning, Yesterday started out pretty rough , one of my 95's started acting up. To start it would show it was getting hot then the temperture would drop to normal, then a minute later back high agian. We shut it down and brought water trailer and washed radiator, oil cooler, a/c and tryed agian. Well same results - pee bottle was full of waTER opened hood and the water bottle on the radiator was BLACK - not good. I pulled engine oil cooler and the water side of the cooler was perfect - not leaking into the block. I guess now its time to pull the head. The oil is clean and no water in it and the bottom radiator hose is perfectly clean - no oil in the bottom of the radiator. I was wondering if others have experianced this as well, i was thinking the oil has clogged the top portion of the radiator and is not letting water thru and thats why the water is still clean in the bottom. The engine is only low of oil by 1-2 quarts at the most, but it normally uses 1 gallon every two weeks so this isnt far off. Its a 2005 model with 5300 hours. I talked w/my locall dealer and they told me the 9400's had a problem with a sand pit in the casting of the heads and would blow a head, and they have changed my on them. But have not run into trouble on the 9520's with this issue. Any advice or experiance is greatly appreciated - will problelly open it up and pull the head Monday. Thanks

the head gasket can leak in a few ways, an externally blown gasket will leak oil or water from the internal passages externally on to the block. the head gasket can also leak internally, either into the combustion chambers where it is burned, or into the other passages. contaminated water with oil would suggest the latter. you have already confirmed that the oil cooler is in good nik, so you just may have to pull the head. best case is that the gasket let go. worst case, you warped the head...
