I am working on a John Deere 490 E. I have hydraulic oil mixed in with the gear oil in the final drive. Can I separate the hydraulic motor from the planetary without removing the whole assembly and tracks?
Welcome to HEF bclayton ! I guess you could. I don't do it that way. Too much trouble getting the rotating group and brake discs in that way. I think it is easier to have the whole assembly out and on the floor with the planetary side on the ground with the motor pointing up. See attached link below - I know it is not a 490 but the repair is done the same way (minus the planetary portion).
