Kenworth W900 Steering Hard

still learn'n · 2018-05-09 10:12

We have a 2005 Kenworth W900 that has a Spicer E1322I 13,200 lb front axle and are wanting to put dual steering gearboxes on it and our Kenworth dealer has been in contact with Paccar and they say its not possible. The reason is for hard steering. We have changed the steering gear box and also the pump and don't seem to change any. Does anybody know of this axle that has dual steering gearboxes? Is there anything else we could do to make it steer easier?

Just so happens we had nine 05 KW's that had that problem, they came spec'ed with the wrong pump from the factory. They were replaced under warranty but I don't remember the pump number. Your rig probably has a aluminum body TRW. Truck Shop

What kind of weight are you running on it? What size tires? Does the hard steering come and go based on the load? I think you need to get up to a 18 or 20k axle for dual gear boxes. Best bet might be a salvage for a 20k axle and related hardware to swap in.

Yes the pump housing is aluminum on it We have 425/65/22.5 tires. We did have 385s on it and it didn't make any change. When we got it in 07 it had 385s on it so idk what it came with from the factory. It don't seem to change at all with different loads on it. I was looking for a front axle with dual box capabilities and found some but will they bolt up to our springs and all work right?

Ours had hard steering with tag down when lifted backing up the front axle weight went from 12,200 to almost 15,500. Backing up became a real job. We had the same axle 13,200 and we run 295-22.5's. The pump's that were wrong had the wrong PSI and flow rate. And PacCar is not going to admit there was a problem, we changed the pumps before 20,000 miles. And with time that has pasted on your truck all there going to see when looking up by Vin number is the same pump over and over again unless you find a smart parts person a the KW counter

Do you still have the trucks? Would you be able to get part numbers off of them?

Is a dual gearbox pump higher flow and pressure? If it is what would happen if I put one of those on?

No we dumped them in 07, when we had five out of the nine all in the Kenworth shop at once-that was the end of those. Only had 200,000 on them. Every one of them were Bermuda Triangles. A truck broker from Nebraska bought all nine and lost his *** on all of them. Truck Shop

I will check with a real good parts man at KW tomorrow he should be able to bring up one of our old truck numbers and see what comes up. Truck Shop

The number for the correct pump on ours was PEV 2516-15R101. Now those were ISX Cummins powered and you have a Cat, the problem with ours was at idle speed or low speed the original pump would not produce enough PSI and flow. But that number above should cross over to compare your pump ratings. It's a long shot. Truck Shop

Thank you I will check with Kenworth parts and see what I figure out

Funny story from a friend that works at the local Peterbilt dealer... In '09 they got a shipment of new trucks from Denton and all six trucks had the p/s pumps replaced during the pre-delivery, Wrong pumps and the factory knew before the trucks made it to the dealer.

So here is some information the pump with the SN beside it is what our serial number shows to be on our truck. The one with the arrow beside it is what the one Truck Shops part number goes to. The one with asterick beside it is what a truck with a 20,000lb front axle goes to. My question is what is nominal displacement different then controlled flow rate? Which number will affect the most with the problem we are having? My Kenworth parts guy says that the L and R in the part number have to do with the rotation and ours is a left hand so we need a pump with left hand rotation.

Looks to me like nominal displacement is the volume of fluid pushed through the pump per revolution. 25ml/r equates to 40 revolutions needed to pump a litre. Kinda curious why you've got the big boots on up front with a light steer axle?

So why the two numbers cause wouldn't they both correlate with rpm either way cause isn't it a grea pump? It came with 385s and that's what we on it till the last time we changed tires then the driver wanted 425s

I would try putting a washer or two behind the relief valve spring under that plug before I spent any money . If it changes it for the better, put a gauge on it and set it at the 165 bar on the chart . You may even be able to buy the correct heavier spring .

    Is this the plug?

Ive just been looking at new pump prices, for the $250 a new one is, please disregard what i said . The guys above gave good advice, just buy the higher pressure pump .

Did you find the solution? I’m in same situation.
