Helping a friend out and installed a zexel inline fuel pump on a d 21 dozer. Bolted new pump up but will not start. Smoke coming from pipe but will not hit. Could timing be off? Someone else removed it and was sent to pump shop and checked out. Installed it and lined out up outer timing marks. Did it have to be timed when taken off? Thanks
Yes it should have been timed before removal. Did it come back from the F.Shop with a gear?? or plain drive shaft w/a key?? To time it properly you have to figure out what cylinder the engine is on..remove the valve cover..find out what your engine timing *'s are supposed to be..rotate the engine in the normal direction of rotation till you get to "x" *'s before TDC #1 cylinder.. Remove the side cover from the pump, rotate the camshaft till #1 is bottom dead center on the cam and just starting to come up, slide the pump in..you should have enough room to rotate the pump to line up your marks. good luck. TPG BTW> this method is for a "gear".. IF it came back with a "key"..it should be as simple as lining up the key with the slot in the gear and lining up the marks.
