Steering Clutch(es) on Komatsu D21a-6 are seized, so trying to remove them. Made it all the way inside the steering clutch housing, and need to rotate the clutch in order to unbolt it. Dozer is lifted on to jacks, transmission is in Neutral (Forward), and I've been using a bottle jack to turn the track. I've tried engaging the inching clutch. We were able to move the yoke away from the steering clutch. Track still won't budge!! Any ideas?
I have found that a couple of stiff drinks while watching an episode of SpongeBob gets my creative juices flowing.
Drop the jack shaft out from between the damper housing incase the interior brake or something is stuck on. Otherwise I'd smack the steering housings a big with an air hammer or normal hammer and see if they loosen up, make sure nothing is stopping the other track form moving, like is the other side tilting down with the equaliser bar piloting and causing the track to dig into the ground and make it hard to turn?
Use a jackall instead of a hydraulic jack, much faster and easier, cheers
Lots of rust in the picture along with dirt that should have been blown away before taking the top cover off. Will have to clean very well once apart. Bearings don't like dirt. Simon C
Using a bottle jack or floor jack is all I have every used to move the tracks, i guess make sure its in nuteral not to familar with the d21 set up, now on the side of the dozer just infront of the final drive is a plug that takes a 17mm type of socket that you can take out and the bolt on the outside of the drum line up perfect to take them out ,,,, everything is 17mm on the bolts to the drum on both sides, now where the brake band is i would put 2 heavy duty zip ties or some sort of rope and secure it so it does not drop down once you get the bolts out but more than likely the flange on the inner side will be stuck might have to pry it loose a bit to free up that drum if it falls down your going to be cussing up a storm cause its extreemly heavy so have it secured,,, now when putting it back in the biggest issue is getting that clutch cover on correctly there is a little tab that goes in that slot on the brake band,,,, its is a bitch to get it to go on what i have found is find the smallest zip tie and loop it around the ear tabs that hold the springs on both sides, then take clutch cover and drop down from top as far forward as you can then pull it back and then line it up with the hole oh forgot the adjustment bolt you just got squeeze your fingers in there to get it to go over that first hook on the band make sure you leave it as loose as possilbe now once the cover is lined up then tighten bolt up till you just start feeling some resistance then the hole in the side of the clutch over where that hydraulic solinoid goes you need to have a borescope to stick down and find that tab and slot to make sure its in correctly if its not then start over,,, now if its in correctly then you need a good long thin screwdriver and stick it in the hole with the borescope and find the zip tie and break it with the screw driver then loosen up the adjustment bolt about 2 1/2 turns then finish putting it back together,,, I urge you to have a borescope to check that tab is in the slot there is no other way to know it went in right lots of times its slide over the top of the slot,,,, and you will put it all together and start it up and drive off it will go straight forward and backward but it will NOT Turn if that tab is not in the slot GET a Borescope. ,,, best to pain the tab one color and the slot another color makes it eaiser to find with a borescope,,, if you got oil in the case most likely the seal from the final drive has failed ,,,, if the oil level is correct in the final drive then the oil is coming from the inner seal from the transmission... any questions ask away
