Typical for a large machine. The cylinders are installed with the barrel to the top in an attempt to prevent the exposed rods being damaged by flying debris.

Probably for prevent seal to if upside position?

Preventing seal damage is another possibility.

It should also give it more lifting power. It would have the full piston to put pressure against, vs the other way has the rod taking up half the diameter of the piston to push against

It's still extending the cylinder to lift, extending is always more powerful than retracting, no matter which end is up.

Belooky If you turn the ram upside down conventional style you still will be using cylinder head side for lift.

Any side cylindre is, it most be extended for lift boom. In tjis case It's always head side that works.

From what I've see on large hydraulic shovels it just made more sense to route the hoses onto the boom and then down onto the cylinder barrel instead of under the boom and up the cylinder. They stay in one place and don't have to bend up and down as the boom moves.

I agree with you John C.

Big hoses don't bend as easy and there's less bending mounting them on the boom vs the house.
