1993 case 580 sk fuel gauge issues. Gauge was buried 'full' and not moving. Found a broken wire by sending unit, repaired with splices. Now guage reads buried on empty with engine running? has a very slight movement with just key on ( flickers a little)?? can sender be bad and how miserable to replace?

You need to remove the wire at the sender unit & ground it. If the gauge moves to full its OK & the sender unit is faulty. If it fails to move either the gauge is faulty or the wiring to the gauge is open circuited somewhere.

which wire, there is two, but will try both. Also the plug in harness above the sender is pretty ugly, maybe should open and clean Is it a real chore to replace sender? And is one even available, if it turns out bad? If so plan on running til very low on fuel ????? and raise rear of hoe as high as possible before attempting that big nut on sender, correct/ Thanks for your info

Clean and/or replace the ugly connector. That could be the problem. I had problems with the fuel gauge on my tractor. Bought a new gauge and sending unit but the sending unit was wrong. Tried to modify it but couldn't get anything to work. Kind of by fluke discovered the original gauge wasn't grounding properly. I took the gasket that fits around the gauge in the dash off and the gauge works again. I had a working gauge again so wasn't going to mess with it any more. The fuel gauge in the grader didn't work but soon discovered why when we went to take the sending unit out. The rod that goes down in the tank had broke off from the base of the mounting plate. Check wires and connections first.
