Wow, I thought I lost these pics as I have been looking for them for some time. Was organizing my pics today and ran across them in a folder. A couple of years ago, our truck driver came in the shop and said "come on and clock out...you gotta see this!". Drove down the road just a couple miles, him telling me on the way what I was going to see. The very instant we pulled into the driveway, I spotted the cause of the mishap and said "well, there's the problem...they don't have any counterweights on it!". The embarassing part; this is a local crane company, this is their crane, this is their yard/shop. Oops! :Banghead Looks like they had the boom somewhere between 30 to 40 degrees and started booming out. With no counterweights...she came down. Missed the end of their building by just a couple of feet. I'd say someone got a good #%&@ chewing.
Aw jeez... Just a momentary lapse in thinking and what a costly result! Hopefully nobody was injured other than their pride.
Well, don't think any serious injuries resulted, never saw the accident reported on the local news or papers. But it had to be embarrasing, their lot is adjacent to a heavily traveled interstate highway for all to see the nose of their Grove sticking up in the air. :Banghead
No counterweights and a lotta boom run out, recipe for disaster!!
my guess, they were greasing the boom of adjusting the slides. a local company here flopped a 360 ton liebherr the same way.
Agree .. Looks like its a Grove 6250 -6350..Same unit generally with some differences ..To grease the boom ..base slab and 10t/ full outriggers ..she'll flop with less than that pictured here .. ..The operator would be in the wrong ..he would have had to input a false CW config ..or forgot to change it after unloading the stone .. Remember what i said about the LMI as an aid ...this is quite possibly the end result of that .. Atco's comment strikes me though .."somebody got a chew'n out".. in a smaller ..tighter net bunch of guys.. Chances are with no real apparent damage, and above all no injurys.,theres a little room for a brain fart and the "oppp's factor" the operator would be given an opputunuty to lick his wounds, patch his pride and get back on his horse tommorow..Lesson very well learned.. Get in with a larger, multistate, multinational company, pick anyone of those ..unless your in with a manager ...your a bar code on a badge .. they make badges everyday..
Yep, Liebherr, this is a multistate crane outfit here in the states, this is just one of their many locations. It must have took a good lick, in the days after they were removing the boom to my recollection. Bad day at the office I guess.
Terrible day at the office ... Had to pull the boom ... Hope the guy had a chance to clear his locker ..
Best we could do is speculate. Never saw any published news or printed reports about the incident, which at least idicates there were probably no serious injuries/casualties, which is good. I recall them dismantling the machine, can't remember if they lifted the upper, do remember boom being removed. It could have been simply precationary measures of this large corporation crane outfit. You know, take things apart, inspect, test, check, document, all the legal stuff that would allow the unit to remain in certifiable status after being tipped. Then again, could have been damaged, just don't know.
Yes .. wrong emoticon ..I meant it figuratively..
