Why does it have to be an Aveling Barford?

  2. #2Kasusya Kimotho2022-06-14 03:39

Because of the creative and extremely useful engineering which which went into the old machines; 6X6X6 drive and steering, stable, and simple.

  3. #3Welder Dave2022-06-14 13:40

I think you have a really tall order finding one for sale.

  4. #4Kasusya Kimotho2022-06-15 02:29

So I give up? I particularly like the 6X6X6 wheel drive. Any alternatives?

  5. #5Welder Dave2022-06-15 02:53

Most if not all common brands offer all wheel drive options.

  6. #6Kasusya Kimotho2022-06-15 09:32

The more modern ALL WHEEL DRIVE used units are likely to be damn expensive. Am after a mean budget ALL WHEEEL DRIVE used unit. (early 80s to late 90s). Need raw pulling power even if spartan in creature comforts.

  7. #7Welder Dave2022-06-15 14:43

A larger 4 wheel drive grader 16 to 20 tons would probably do similar work to a smaller 6 wheel drive. Are you working strictly in mud or something that you constantly need 6 wheel drive? Budget is one thing but limiting your options to a very specific brand that was never super popular would be a huge gamble and could end up costing more in the end. No matter what you're going to need parts at some point. How available are A/B grader parts?

  8. #8Kasusya Kimotho2022-06-16 11:32

I do absolutely agree with you on your observations on the capabilities of a sizeable 6X4 and ultimately on spares availability on chosen. The "AV" choice was the first preference, but other affordable models are also spot (FIAT-ALLIS, CATS)- plenty of spares over here. JDs can also do. We have dealers. You will note am more on the older lines of these machines. We don't constantly work on muddy conditions; the converse:- Very hard sun baked and compacted soils. At time the blade will not even bite and one has to rip before a decent blade cut can be attempted.

  9. #9Welder Dave2022-06-16 18:49

A rear ripper might be the best option and much easier to source a machine with a ripper.

  10. #10Kasusya Kimotho2022-06-17 03:31

Welder Dave; ANY suggestions on a good machine with a ripper?

  11. #11.RC.2022-06-17 04:33

From what I understand Aveling Barford 6WD drive graders, the front drive is mechanical. On other brands it is hydraulic and electronically controlled. How reliable do you think hydraulically powered electronically controlled front wheel drive machines from the 1980's are?

  12. #12Kasusya Kimotho2022-06-17 04:49

I was actually purposely, and very expressly avoiding anything electronic. Worse mechatronics. Its sheer trouble for individuals and small companies based in rural Africa. That mechanical drive like in the "AV" is/was the thing. The shaft breaks, you WELD. The bearing burst, you replace. Hydrostatic drives are a disaster. They are only angelic so long as they are working fine and there is a standby budget. Once they give up you are done. An arm and the two legs to repair!!!.

Keep in mind in your search, Austin-Western graders are much the same as Ambling Barstewards.

  14. #14Welder Dave2022-06-17 15:54

Something like an older Cat G series or maybe a Champion/Volvo or JD. The Cat G series are generally considered one of the most reliable graders ever made and parts are likely easier to source. Just about every brand had rippers available and it shouldn't be too hard to find one with the ripper attached. You need to have a reasonable budget though. If you don't want to spend over say $20,000 you may not find what you're looking for and if you do, it might need a lot of work to put it in good operating condition.

I would have a bias towards a CAT or A FIATALLIS. Have seen them take heavy beatings and still purr. Spares are available as you have correctly. What am not seeing are any with the rear mounted ripper for high productivity, not the mid-belly scarifier.

  16. #16Welder Dave2022-06-18 17:26

What is your budget? Here's exactly what you're looking for with a Cummins engine, that should be desirable. It's also fairly low hours. Also some Cat's with rippers. 1986 AVELING BARFORD ASG113 For Sale in Cambridgeshire, England | MachineryTrader.com 1983 AUSTIN-WESTERN 466 For Sale in Madera, California | MachineryTrader.com 1976 CATERPILLAR 140G For Sale in Farr West, Utah | MachineryTrader.com 1978 CATERPILLAR 140G For Sale in Union Gap, Washington | MachineryTrader.com 1976 CATERPILLAR 140G For Sale in Houston, Texas | MachineryTrader.com CATERPILLAR 140G For Sale in Madera, California | MachineryTrader.com

I reckon that would have to be a Austin Western Super 500. Possibly ex NZ Army. Does it have a manual gearbox and torque converter?
