losing prime

Kenworth T-800, C-15 We've had this problem since it was new. After servicing, it would die and I'd have to use the hand pump to get it started again. It'd do the same thing to the driver for the next few mornings. The dealer replaced a couple of check valves and the primer pump but the problem never entirely went away. Now it's back and isn't going away. Only happens first thing in the morning and it and it won't happen as much if the tanks are full. Ideas? Anyone else run across this? Rob

Rob, Just a couple of things. Even though the dealer has been through this, check all connections (starting at the tanks all the way to and thru the engine) to make sure they are tight. The fact that it only happens after it has set overnight lends itself to a very small vacumn leak. There have been problems with the filter heads. Not all filter heads, but occasionally one where there is a hairline crack that causes the problem you are having. Also, on the bottom of the filter head is where the main check valve is located. It is a shallow (thin) headed fitting. Place a clean (preferably white) paper towel or cloth under it before you remove the check valve. After removal, check for debris on the towel/cloth and then do a very close inspection of the check valve for debris lodged in the dealing surface of the check valve. If by chance the hoses had anything left in them from new assy, that could be causing the problem. It can be an ongoing problem as somtimes the debris will only move a small bit or 2 thru the line at a time and at random. Hope this helps

Thanks for the input! Everything you said seem's reasonable. (got a first name?)

Found it. Recently switched to Wix filters. The LuberFiner primary had an oring seal included in the shrinkwrap. The seal goes over the filter housing neck. I guess it seals off the threads. Wix puts this seal in the box loose. "Someone" forgot to install the seal. I guess it must prevent the fuel from being siphoned back to tank. Anyway, It doesn't stall anymore.

Yes, those little o-rings can be a devil. There have been some cases where someone forgets to takes the old o-ring off, and adds the new one. Basically has the same effect that you were having without the o-ring. Anyway, good deal that you found the problem.
