I have a Case 1840. It is a older year model (1980's). It was running great and then started have some trouble starting but still would start. Finally all it would do when you turned the key was make a winding sound. Nothing would turn. We took the starter off and had to leave it sitting for a few weeks be cause of a busy schedule. We out the starter back on and cranked it just to see what it would do. It cranked 3 times and is now doing the same thing. Any ideas on what could be going on?
Is the battery charged up? Either a weak starter or weak battery would be my first guess. Possibly a malfunctioning solenoid not pulling in completely?
Check the trigger wire on the starter solenoid. My girlfriend calls the starter solenoid the "little frog mounting the big frog"...whatever the hell that means, sometimes corrosion can get behind the nut and cause intermittent contact which sounds about right with your issues.
Sounds like a bad starter bendix. It's slipping in the one way sprag.
Or it could be exactly what Mobiltech is saying.
Don't even mess with it, it's a little Cummins 4BT starter, DBelectrical has them for just under a hundred bucks and free ground shipping. http://www.dbelectrical.com/p-11468...6&cadevice=c&gclid=CLHptq6Bs8YCFYUdgQodBjsOLg
