Swan Neva's Grandson Braden Tuck has loaned us his Grandfathers photo album to share . It started with Swan Neva's father inlaw J.T.Jewula prior to the 2nd World War operated J.W.Jewula Transfer , after the 2nd World War , Swan Neva left the woods as a faller , to pursue a trucking business . Since then the Neva family has been operating in the Lake Cowichan area as S. Neva Contracting , Swan's son Gordy as Gordy Neva Trucking and his Grandson's Gord and Braden Tuck as Tuck Bros. Contracting . The Neva's are a hard working bunch and I'm amazed Swan took the time to take these pictures . Swan Neva is no longer with us , but I think any body who knew him will have some fond memories of him , and I hope some of those memories will be shared on this thread .

I worked with Swan for many years at CZ Nitinat. His attitude was summed up in 2 words. "Oh well"

Braden T. Not sure where these pictures were taken , Swan Neva lived at Comox before moving to the Lake Cowichan area .

Some great old time pictures, sure enjoy seeing all of them. Thanks, once again camptramp for putting them up for us to enjoy.

  14. #14camptramp2015-08-22 21:53

Up until the 1980's the Forest Industry was a unique place to live and work , lots of outfits big and small to work for , lots of "Character's" to work for and with . Now its like working in a monopoly factory without coffee breaks . Were so lucky guy's like Swan Neva took the time to take pictures for us to ponder over .

Braden T. (Swan Neva) Got ahead of myself . The second Picture in posting #37 and this one are of Swan Neva hauling copper ore concentrate from the "Blue Grouse" Copper Mine for Cowichan Cooper. Mine was located about 3KM west of Honeymoon Bay BC .

Braden T. (Swan Neva) 1937 White

  39. #39Sidney432015-08-25 01:17

I suspect the reason no one recognized the truck as a 1937 White is the nose is gone, leaving only a radiator, so pretty hard to identify from windshield and cab. Love all these vintage pictures of men getting out the logs and not a hard hat to be seen, thanks for posting them. After posting, I took a look at Hanks Trucks and most whites of this era had a one piece windshield, which was pretty distinctive of that truck manufacturer. Not saying the notes on the photo are wrong, just not one I have ever seen.

  40. #40RCP572015-08-25 05:51

I wondered if it might be a White given that it seems they were a popular brand back then. This truck had obviously lived a very hard life looking that rough after just 11 years of service. Of course back then they probably removed the drivers door because it took too much time out of the day to open and close it!

  41. #41Hayesno12015-08-25 11:49

I am pretty sure it is a White. That radiator is typical a White rad. Cab I am NOT sure but I'll find out. Cab has been added later. Look closely - hood and cab don't fit. Cab at front is wider than The hood...

  42. #42RCP572015-08-25 12:10

I agree that it looks like a frankintruck.lol Where have you been hiding Kim? Glad to see you back!

  43. #43HDX2015-08-25 21:55

Sorry you guys NOT a White It is a 1940 Hayes. There was only a couple of these built because Hayes was in transition from the earlier body style and going to the "Heart Shaped Grill" body design. The above truck has been in several rough treatment situations and as things got damaged they were replaced with whatever was around. This truck was around the Cowichan/NitNat area its entire life.

  44. #44RCP572015-08-25 21:59

Thanks for solving the mystery HDX. No offense but that was one ugly Hayes!

  46. #46camptramp2015-08-26 00:56

Braden T. (Swan Neva) I can't be absolutely certain , but when my father went to work for BCFP at Harris Cr. Camp and moved us into Port Renfrew in 1954 we live in the area then known as the Renfrew Beach side of the San Juan Valley now known as Elliotville . Down the road maybe a 1/2 mile was the site of the old Hemmingsen Cameron Beach Camp and Log Dump for their Logging Rail Road , at the Junction of the North Arm of the San Juan River and the Gordon River . The remains of a Mobile Derrick that ran on two sets of rail road tracks along the rivers edge like the one in picture was still there . The rivers shore looks very familiar , I believe its the same one . It was used to make "Davis Rafts" a method of transporting logs before Bundled Booms and Log Barges were perfected .

  60. #6072hayes2015-08-30 17:28

Great pictures CT! In post #50 3rd picture looks like a Skagit SJ4R. They seem to be using the snorkel to help throw the tongs in the pre grapple days. In Post #54 4th and 5th pictures look like a Marion model 21 Electric Shovel. They were the same as a steam shovel only they had a gen set and used Electric motors in place of the 3 steam engines (crowd, swing and hoist). Doug

  61. #61camptramp2015-08-30 20:11

I think your right on the Skagit , we used to do something very similar on a Washington TL 15 tong loader we had a pole off the end of the boom with a block on the end of it . We ran the "Strawline" out through the block and back to the Tong line using an open face shackle on the end of the Strawline , it would pull the Tong Line out passed the debris on the roadside to the "Right Away" logs . One time I pulled the Tong's out to a log , as I dropped the Tongs on the log , the Shackle had slid down the Tong Line pasted the "Eye Splice" . I had my hand on the "Splice" when the operator took the slack out of the Tong Line , the shackle slid up the line and pushed my finger into a "Jagger" which went through my finger . Try to signal the operator to slack the Strawline with one hand , when he can't see whats happening . Its funny now but it wasn't then . The picture of the Shovel is pretty dark , but it sounds like you know your shovel's .

  62. #62Sidney432015-08-30 23:12

The machine in post #50 in this thread certainly looks like an early Skagit, but when compared to the machine in post #14 in the "Northern California Logging" thread there are quite a few differences. The tower and boom are a lot different, as is the operators cab. This one is truck mounted and the other is either self propelled, or had to be towed from landing to landing. Perhaps someone here can comment further. I would post that picture for comparison, but that may not be appropriate in someone else's thread.

In the third picture there is a 1956 Ford gravel truck on the right. One quickly learns to use the grader berm to turn the front wheels when you are turning around because with no power steering it's a chore. By running the front wheels against the bank at the right angle it turns the wheel and takes a lot of work out of it for you. On the other hand one quickly learns to keep their thumbs out of the spokes of the steering wheel cause it's gonna hurt. Don't ask how I know other than both thumbs, same day!

  88. #88Jumbo2015-09-10 22:59

In post #87; #5 in the last photo is the first truck I have seen with an I or H beam for a reach, was this common?

  89. #89camptramp2015-09-10 23:14

I don't know for sure when the Forest Industry switched from wooden reaches to steel reaches , some of the first HDX Hayes (mid 1950's) I'm sure came with wooden reaches . By the time I started in the woods (mid 1960's) though's same trucks had steel 'I" beam reaches . Just a guess , but making a steel "I" beam reach was probably an easy quick change over .

Vigilant,if you were to go the site " logging accidents and they walked away" starting on page 22 post #318, the whole site is scenes of the crash with 2 trucks in each picture. Have a good day BP.

  106. #106Vigilant2015-09-12 19:54

Thanks, BP. I remember seeing those photos when posted, but did not make the connection until just now. Did the driver of the Pacific bail out, or was he injured inside the cab? Did part of his body come into contact with the steering wheel to cause that unnerving bend?

  107. #107Blk prince2015-09-12 20:24

The driver of Pacific stayed in truck.1 1/2 hrs to get him out. Most of the damage was done during impact but just as much was done loading scrap onto lowbed. We used log loader to get load off Kenworth then take them apart

In Post 113-114. Swan had jumped off loader before it went over the bank. I had dropped him off the lowbed and by the time I got off the hill this had happened. He had scrapes and bruises but no serious injury.

Braden T. (Swan Neva) 1st picture is of load and trailer laying on its side at head of Cowichan Lake . 2nd picture is Gordon Neva under load fishing for something , my guess is he's trying to save cinches and wrapper's . 3rd picture hooking trailer up to Gordon Neva's truck . 4th picture is load on Gordon Neva's truck , Gordon Neva's truck is a really cool truck , the P510S pictured has a 3408 Cat in it . Some of the things Swan and Gordon pulled off are what legends are made of , a couple of things that stand out about Gordon is watching him turning around the "A" trailers he use to pull with his P510S Pacific in some of the tightest quarters to load up with shake bolts. And watching him take one of their old International Paystar 5000 gravel trucks equipped with a "Power divider" no lockers , up a steep hill empty , following a jerk in a logging truck with everything locked up churning up the road . Gordon walked the old gravel truck up the same hill and hardly turned over a pebble .

  187. #187Blk prince2015-10-02 09:15

I can. I did post somewhere but this was on a Saturday. Shop Boss and Tireman wanted to eliminate flat tires on lowbed. This bed had 16 tires. So they had a plan. Take 2 tires off and install 1 balloon tire. They did ask me about it. I said ok BUT only do it on inside set to try it. So come Saturday morning. I show up to movedGY and tires are on lowbed. 2 balloon tires on right side front and back. Not happy but Foreman says go. So coming downhill around corner and over a large N-head and outside tires roll off the rims. Go get line horse, pull lowbed back on her feet, move around the corner and unload GY. Monday morning in Manager's office, lots of finger pointing. Safety officer comes to conclusion I was going too fast. But first thing to be done is take tires off, never too be seen again. Then go pick up a rock drill and blow N-head. GY sits waiting and crew waits for move. I confronted Manager as to "going too fast"and his only reply was,go to work. End of story

Hey Camptramp... For those that have inquired... I asked Gordon if he knew anymore info on this 1940 Hayes in post#37. He remembers gramps telling him about who owned this truck. But at this moment he cant remember the name. He thinks possibly it may of had something to do with Don Braithwaite? Or possibly his father. I think he said the dad had logging equipment or was in the industry?? ..Hope this might help

On the outside of the bed,we had 4 pins welded. These were 10" high made of 4" round stock. They were 4' back from gooseneck and 4' ahead of front axle. Just a guide to keep GY straight as it broke over centre when loading. These helped to stop GY from sliding off. Jim,in the previous post there is one picture of us beside the bed on driver's. It was 60" off the ground. Thankfully it did end well

These trucks all went to Richies in the 80's, when things changed at crown nititnat. This was all before my time however, I always wondered what part of the coast they ended up. Digging through grandpas archives, i do have some information. HDX maybe you may know some other info on them???: #5 was a 1959 HayesHDX ser#9082039 32-80. Originally with a 6-110gm, later converted to a 350 cummins. #8 1965 P12Pacific ser#T6583 259.I was told this truck went to **** Nimmo at some point, and had a loader installed on it. Apparently its in mission area somewhere now? #9 1954 HD ser#4021511 20-70. Ended up with a 350 cummins, They kept the original engine, but i cant remember the problem with it? Grandpa never threw anything away... #11 1956KW 848. ser#63212. #12 1955KW cd848 ser#64451. (Blk Prince, you probably remember my dad, mike. he drove this quite abit.) #18 1963 HDX ser#3032413. I believe this one had a v12 gm. From what i was told, it was originally a Bill Neal truck from sooke??

First off Welcome to the site Braden, Thanks for letting Al post all these pictures I know you have managed to track down most of them through the family and friends It is a real testament to you and the Neva Family. There are a lot of people that come on here and although they don't say anything they for sure really enjoy just being able to see your family history through all these pictures. Braden, welcome aboard. I do remember your Dad. He was at Nitinat for awhile then went wrenching at Shoal. Have not seen him in years. Hauled from Swan and hauled his machine. Also Gordie and Richard hauled with us. I was doing a walk along main drag in Ladysmith and a SHINY yello, green and white Mack caught my I. Very nice. Good friends with Cliff and Len Davis.

Thanks a lot Steve, I will talk to Larry about that. Sounds great! Grandpa always had a camera and took a lot of pictures. However we should of asked more questions and wrote the stuff down, because we cant remember what some of them were!.. yes I have pictures of the pacific. Will get them posted soon

  233. #233Pacific862015-10-16 01:36

BP. no idea about 212 but I will ask Gordon. he may know since he's the one in it. Yes your right, you did see a new mack. Has a mack automatic 12 speed transmission. I bug cliff just about everyday.lol

  234. #234Blk prince2015-10-16 05:02

Braden, what is Gordon doing these days. Any logs to haul? What about gravel end of things. Does family still have Swan's shop and property?

  235. #235Blk prince2015-10-16 16:17

Pacific86,out for my walk today. Saw the shiny Mack. Is it staying on the highway or will it become a logger?

BP, Gordon still works the gravel trucks on the TFL abit. Not a lot of work there anymore. He keeps himself busy, convinced him to fill in haul logs for us today on the pacific. I had Richard out the other day for the same.. I try to keep the older retired crowd from being bored once and awhile..lol. The shop and propertys are all still in the family, nothing has really changed too much. The mack will go wherever its needed. All of our tractors are standard, which is a pain for my brother to drive. He only has the one leg, so with the auto gravel truck as well as the tractor, he can move anything around as well.

First of all thanks for posting these pics, this is my favorite thread on the Internet, second are the steer tires really off the ground in the 3rd pic of 243? Been around a lot of log hauling and road building , never seen that before!

  245. #245HDX2015-10-27 22:13

Post 244 under the dump machine was taken at Sarita Dump -- Dump machine was L04 with the live "A" frame

  246. #246camptramp2015-10-27 23:10

The front steering wheels are off the ground . Whats causing that to happen ? Probably a couple of things , could be the transition from level to steep hill , could be somebody forgot to release the compensator link on trailer hitch or a low sagging log sitting on trailer rider bars on tail frame on truck , preventing the tail frame from pivoting up as truck breaks over hill . Had the opposite happen one time , tandem truck pulling a triaxle " wagon " as I pulled up an adverse grade , I broke over the top , the rider bars on tail frame of truck lifted the load up off truck bunk and load slid back on to rider bars . Fortunately I wasn't far from loading sight , loader had to walk up and reload the load .

A bit of background on the 65 Pacific: Originally sold to Power & Eckert Logging Salvage Ltd., of Lake Cowichan, the truck was delivered on February 4th, 1965. It was a model RB-4640-E (The B might be something different, the ink is smudged on the line ticket), originally shipped with an NTC-350, it had an 8041-A main transmission and an 8341-D Auxiliary. I have the line tickets here and will scan them hopefully this weekend...
