Oil draining engine transmission

Harveststar · 2021-05-10 16:21

Hi I’m bit new to the heavy plant world, by trade i service and repair agricultural machinery but recently taken on one D5 and two D6 dozers Looking on advice on the best way to drain oils from the engine and transmission I noticed on the C6 engine it has a screw in attachment on the sump is this for a hose to drain into a pan or for a pump so the oil can be pumped out, any help appreciated

Got photos.? On many compartments Cat use what's called an "Ecology Drain". To get the fluid out of the compartment you remove a plug and then screw a pipe nipple of the appropraiie size (3/4" from memory but i may be wrong) into the drain fitting. The nipple presses on a spring-loaded check valve and opens it allowing the fluid to drain out. Doesn't the owner of the tractors have an Operation & Maintenance Manual for each of them.? I dunno how anyone could do PM work without knowing what tasks should be performed at what intervals..... FYI the O&M Manuals can be downloaded from Cat in pdf form for about $50 each, which at the current rate is about 35 quid. Amongst other things they contain lubricant recommendations, and I bet those tractors use oil in the transmission, final drives, recoil compartments, etc, that are not common in your agricultural field. Serial Numbers would assist greatly in identifying exactly what you are dealing with.

And then there are those ecology drains that for some crazy reason come apart when you think you are just removing the drain plug to install that nipple. Don't think I ever figured out why that one 980G did that just about every time! Transmission drain as I recall. Probably should have just either replaced the whole thing or removed it from machine and cleaned up good and put some red Loc-Tite on that part. But as always was always to busy to spend the time and just lived with it! Now it's someone else problem!

Heck might even be O&M books in pocket on the back of the seat! Never could understand why some people are so afraid to spend the price of one good meal with some adult beverages to be sure a several thousand dollar piece of equipment is properly serviced!
