Hey everybody, I know this is strange but a friend has a wrecking yard and I saw a couple of Detroit V* diesels in there. One has a turbo and a super charger ( I think) on it and the other just a super. Are these turbos and superchargers worth removing? The turbo said air research on it. Are they hard to get off? Just curious.
If someone needs the turbo and stuff why not take the entire engine? That's guessing they run... if not why not never can have enough stuff to trade or sell :naughty
One definately doesn't run. Too big to move for me. The turbo is easy to remove but the superchargers look like they could be a b_____ to take off. Have you ever taken them off? Can these superchargers be used of hot rod motors?
Thats where they origionally came from! Hence 6-71 blowers and 8-71 blowers, named for the engines they were fitted too origionally.
Can these ones be used or do they require lots of work.machining and stuff? Just curious. KInd of interesting.
They can be used on any engine, but .... the original ones are gear driven and the ones you need for your hot rod motor need to be driven by a belt. That means you have to change the end plates where the gear drive is and add the belt drive assembly. By the time you have done that it is cheaper just to buy one already set up from B&M. Not to forget the rotor seals that may need to be done and then the cost just keeps going up and up. On another note - if you can get the turbos cheap and they are still decent internally ..... do a Google search for "turbocharger jet engine"
The fact the motor is in a bone yard....the blowers are probably junk. Spend more to fix them then buying new. Bearings, seals and internal surfaces are likely used beyond cheap fixes. Setting them back up takes alot of knowledge after remachining, so not for the backyarder. I used a NOS 6/71 blower on my hot rod. It was complete in the box, I removed the end bell(drive side), removed the extra gearing, machined the end of shaft for "car" drive and bolted it on. Eight years later it's still going strong, though I only have it set for about 6# of boost. http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh300/Freightrain66/blackgalaxie/blkblwr1.jpg The B/M versions with teflon are really not that great for street use as any kind of dirt gets in them it tears the nylon stip and makes it worse then not having it. Yes, they make better boost, but IMO stock is fine for street use.
