hey guys found this job the other day when out and about there doing whats called an asphalt overlay on the intersection. first they grind about 2 inches off the top and then they repave it. they do it alot here but i have never caught them planing before. is this something they do alot in other areas?
Sure do it over here when they can...they were doing it up the street from me yesterday to prepare for repaving. Sorry, no pics and they got it off the job ASAP. Pics from paving coming as soon as they start!
yeah your lucky to see a planer around here. they are there and then gone i was surprised they were not working tuesday.
I know they do it alot in California, was on a job a couple years ago hauling millings from the bay bridge. PITA as we had to do alot of turning around to get to the bottom deck but it was nice seeing San Fran at night.
there redoing 12 intersections here went back to this one there already done paving and they have moved off to down the street. there working at night the paver has lights on it i have never seen that before. and they have a strange attatchment on the front of the tractor loader.
the other roller, planer, paver, and part of a mobile concrete plant
Now that is one attachment I have never seen. Great pics anyway. What dozers are those in the last pic?
its a jd 750h and a cat d6r lgp
A lot of the paver's now a days have lights because its actually safer to work at night, doing large road paving jobs.
I think that the strange attachment is for holding Geo textile. It looks like it is folded up for transport, Notice the two "cone' shaped things hanging down on each side. they go into the ends of the rolls and there is brushes and rollers to make sure that the carpet is set into the fresh tack oil laid down in front of it. I have laid carpet down on overlay projects before. from what Im told, it is supposed to stop cracks from reflecting up through the new lift of asphalt. It worked fro about four years, then the cracks came back anyways. The City tried it only the one year that I know of, just as an experiment.
that is what its for its like thick black tarp and that lays it down this is only the second time ive seen this attatchment but they use it all over here.
In the past few years they have done two different stretchs of state highways through our county. One was 14 miles(28 lane miles) and the other they did last year was 22 miles(44 lane miles). Grind, relay, new top mat, and red shoulder. My uncle was a foreman for one of the companies years ago and even last year when they broke down they called him asking about a place to get the machine in. Worst thing was the company doing the paving of the mat had their plant set up in one of our quarries and left a HUGE HUGE mess. Trbo
