Its almost over the top thinking of the Pavement put down by logging companys back in the day to make the haul faster-cheaper on parts.... maybe a good spot to add pics or stories/info on these My dad was a long time hd mechanic for crown/bcfp/timberwest/ipl in gordan river, HBO...as kids we would go out with him sometimes... the roads I can think of are...caycuse...Nanaimo lakes main, nitinat main...Renfrew end of Mesachie road.. I will try to take pics of whats left when we go out wheeling next add more if you like, thanks rob wilkin
Salmon river main(sayward area) is also paved and still in use.
A lot of the old mainlines were paved back in the very early 60's due to the fact that there was a million railroad spikes coming up through the gravel road surface from when the railroad "Track Pullers" went through and tore up all the old rail lines. It just killed the hauling cost's for tires so the solution was pavement. These rail road spikes are still there today just waiting for somebody to tear up the pavement because it has gone to hell! After the big outfits were cast aside in favor of better smaller cheaper companies nobody will spend any money to keep them in shape! BCFP M&B and Crown "Z" and all the other big ones did that back then BUT they all spent money every year to maintain these mainlines. WFP a couple years ago spent a little to try and fix some of the bad stretch's of the South Main line out of Franklin heading to the NitNat but it is almost too little too late. When you see a guy walking a grapple yarder right down the paved mainline it tells you what happened to it. The size of the trucks back then was a lot smaller also. When the HDX's and P16's and 850's came on the scene with walking beams in the trailers for suspension they were hauling HUGE loads and with no give in the springs the tires and pavement took the brunt of it. Just found all the old wooden culverts and soft spots and pounded right through it
