Pressure Waterline Project

Metalman 55 ยท 2017-08-02 17:49

One of our customers that we do fab work for in our metal shop asked us about doing a 12" pressure line from their pump house to the production plant, as the project goes along with some pipe fitting & welding we are doing for them in the pump house, so we tackled the job for them. Tomorrow we do the pressure test on it to check for leaks. Keeping our fingers crossed as this is a first for us!

any hefty backer blocks around that elbow? How much pressure? Normally on underground stuff I'll see the outside radius backed with big rocks to keep it from scooting.

The orange rings are called Mega-Lug, a restraint type fitting that is supposed to hold on it's own, but we plan to pour concrete on the outside of the 45 elbow too.....just haven't got that far yet. Pressure will be at 80 psi when operating. Have you seen that type of restraint fitting used?

Back in my water days we use to spec the megalug on the elbows and couplings valves and such including 2-3 pipe joints back. Have seen PVC slip in the trench and separate at the joint. If we spec'd thurst blocks then they had to be back to undisturbed soil of trench side. You should be good with the addition of the thurst block just remember to put a plastic barrier between fitting and concrete for ease of removal later. John

around here on jobs we have done the city usually required thrust blocks also even though we used megalugs and tiebacks and the thrust blocks could NOT be hand mix cement... had to be truck mix even though they were only about 3 feet wide!

Its going into a plant, the biggest wreckers are pressure surges and water hammer, depends what they're doing inside

It passed the pressure (125 psi) test ok late today........that makes us happy!! As shown in the picture we placed the backhoe bucket against the 45 elbow to hold things in place. Plan to pour the concrete at the 45 elbow in the morning & then backfill.

Once you pour the concrete around the backhoe bucket, it'll be snug as a bug!!

Looking good Metalman. I like megalugs, use them exclusively. For the kickers we throw a form up in order to make it look like the drawing, the inspectors love it.

Nice and clean metal man mega lugs are awesome they work great when you can't pour a kicker when your running multiple lines next to each other you just have to put joint restraints on at the first joint before the fitting and after the fitting
