Question for Pumpguy

What would cause a rear bearing failure on a common rail injection pump? Friend had that happen on a common rail 4045. He wasn't really sure what caused it, so when he got everything installed ran the engine for about 30 seconds and shut it off. The pump housing around the rear bearing was very warm to the touch. I remember somebody had K series Cat dozer with the paint burned off the IP, but can't remember how it turned out.

Seeing EVERYTHING inside the unit is fuel lubricated.. My first thought would be no additives in his fuel.? I would have to SEE the failure to determine the actual cause.. That being said, the fuel inside the pump gets VERY hot..

Would it be unusual for the new pump to get over 100° F in 30 seconds of run time? He's mostly worried that something is wrong in the front cover/pump drive and that caused the bearing failure. Would have helped if i hit the post button on this yesterday. His boss told him to run it and no failure yet, so everything is probably normal.

The computer used to calibrate those units wont even function until it reads a temp of 155*F at the fuel return connector.. so yeah, its normal.
