Questions about a D31-16 Komatsu

i am trying to figure out how to adjust the steering on a d31-16. left pedal functions properly, the right pedal you have to really press hard on it, then it will turn the machine. i was also wondering how the clutch/inching pedal on the left side of the floorboard works, do you have to use it when you shift or is it just for inching. it has what i think is 3 forward and 3 reverse powershift. the serial number plate says model..........D31-16 serial no.......26145 i have been trying to price some undercarriage parts and the dealer keeps asking what letter it is?? i am looking to purchase the machine and was wondering if they are decent machines and hold up. thanks for any help and information on dozer:drinkup

The number he is chasing should be either a E or P if it's the same as the later models. E is the standard track with 12 inch grouser plates, P is the swampy with 24 inch pyramid tracks. Although a swampy can be changed back to grouser, it will just have more plates. I have a D31P-20, joystick steer and 6 way blade with the 4 cylinder 4BT Cummins motor. Only had it for about 6 months and have had to fix a few things, but they were just as a result of the dozer living outside, not brand specific faults.

Think the 31- 16 were dry backend so it might have run out of adjustment or have oil or grease on the brake lining, 31-17 had a wet backend so everything was running in oil and as such steering clutches and brakes lasted a lot longer.

The D31-16 were built in the 70s & were dry rear end with 4 cyl engine.Dozers were D31A,P or E ,I think. Undercarriage is made by Berco & many Chinese makers too....often advertised as 17 series chains, etc.Very common. They have an assist valve to aid turning, which can go bad,or clutch plates might be worn/maladjusted. My D31S turns with light pressure on the pedal...big toe only required. Mine is a 25xxx serial number. Later (17 onwards series) had 6 cyl S6 engines. I found Operator,Repair & Parts manuals on eBay.They are a must have, for owners who are doing their own repairs. This site was very helpful when I repaired my Final Drive. I think the Komatsu website might give parts diagrams. Jim
