Ram assist on a highway truck

simonsrplant ยท 2025-10-27 20:06

Interested in adding ram assist on my service truck. Pump is already uprated. Worked with a guy who ran a pete tandem lube truck which had ram assist.... Kinda thinking of tracking down a wrecker and buying everything then adapting as and where. Has anyone done something similar before? Thanks

Are you talking about a extra hydraulic cylinder on the steering system, to help with turning?

Yes. Probably should have clarified. Will be adding on 2001 Freightliner 4x4

How heavy are you on the front axle right now? Peterbilt trucks with heavier front ends have a cylinder over on the passenger side. A lot of the old grove truck cranes with twin steering axles, had cylinders from the second axle tied into the front axle. Steering box moved front axle and cylinder moved the second/ acted as a helper. They were heavy up front (20-22,000 per axle)and always steered fine.

Darn and here I thought it was to ram other trucks in front of you, to push em up the steep hills.

Off road yes on highway no. Is the freightliner a factory 4x4?

Factory 4x4 16k steer axle... I'm thinking the drive axle is why it's heavier to steer whilst not moving.... It's not just a pair of king pins and tires to move.
