This is a D8 built to go to Greenland in the late 50's was quite a swamp tractor, used it in peat bogs and mud waste site around Anchorage in the early 80's

Interesting machine. But what on earth were they doing with a swamp dozer - in Greenland??

There has to be a reason why they would need so much surface area. My guess is to travel over snow. The guage looks simular to the "Streched Cats" they have in Antarctica

I certainly can't think of any other reason other than snow. you could certainly hi center a D8 in snow.

On the right side- at the very rearmost point- why does the grouser look to be at an angle??

Must have a couple broken pad bolts, that's a 2U by the looks of the dash

It's a 15A and they Had Big Trailers they pulled supporting the building of the DEW line, that is what i've been told, yes broken pad bolts, ther was 2 of them that ended up here that I know of, they were pretty abused and baleing wired together when I was around 1 of them.

To Greenland with an open cab??? Not only is it extremely rocky there, but also artic temperatures. So this machine going to Greenland is extremely unlikely as it is equipped in this picture. The swamp tracks make a lot of sense for snow though

Great picture. I never seen this photo before, and based on the picture I think it's a great machine.

This picture looks like its not quite the right aspect ratio. Judging from the Kiddo, and Dad in the photo, the pads are even wider that they looked. Not off to much, just a little bit. My .02

Its a late 2u with a square hood and steel fenders. The earlier 2u had tin fenders with a rolled edge. Also the 14a and 14a had tapered hoods, not square.

    The first LGP?

Perhaps it was built for hauling gear to Camp Century? Camp Century was a base built under the snow/ice in Greenland in the early 60s.
