Sad Volvo EC210 issues, and more issues

Howdy! Been lurking around for a while, finally figured out the security caption thing and joined up! Working on a 05 Volvo EC210 with the D6D electronic engine, no power, can stall it before it goes over relief, continuous black smoke even under slight load, found the obvious stuff, pressure hose at turbo ripped open, so no boost. Turbo has a fair amount of radial play but does not contact housing. They have been running it for a while like this :Banghead so the muffler is sooted up like crazy, good 1/4 of heavy soot in the stack, the muffler is cracked all over and needs to be replaced anyway. Air filter is now plugged with soot but was apparently replaced a week ago. Anyway i'm waiting on parts now, but can't understand why the engine is getting full fuel without any boost, any specs for testing the boost sensor?? There are no codes :bash The original engine ran great until they cooked it, who knew you had to clean the rad out when it's plugged solid.... So they replaced the engine with a "good" used and it's ran like a turd ever since. Once I get the new pressure hose i'm going to run it without the muffler and see how much boost i'm getting, figuring around 25psi? First time working on one of these volvo engines and they seem to have they're own ideas.. Thanks for any help! Greg

That Volvo engine is most probably a Deutz 1012 or 1013, any chance of a few pictures?? tctractors

I have heard about these green painted Deutz engines and you sir are correct! It appears to be very close to a 1013 Deutz in Volvo clothing. Here is a picture of a much cleaner one but the same engine. And a Deutz 1013, Though this Deutz has mechanical injection.

Is the monitor panel showing any fault codes ?

No fault codes, you can see me smashing the computer in my first post! :bash ha ha

The fuel tank has a mesh filter in the bottom always check this item, there is also a belt driven fuel pressure pump that runs at 5 bar, the overhead set of the valves is something these engines love, the most probable cause of your black smoke issue is injector nozzle if you have electronic injectors, if they are mechanical they can be fitted in back to front (odd spray patern) so a pic of what's under the valve cover is handy, the air fuel ratio boost is in the Governer housing, also the fuel rack can sieze up due to a faulty pump. tctractors

Thanks for the info tctractors, this engine has electronic unit pumps on it so no fuel rack and the ECU would be the governor. there is a boost sensor (MAP) on the intake. Talked to the customer last night and the engine was supposedly a new re-man from Volvo less than a year ago, but looks like a well used engine to me (oil leaks, fair amount of blow by, overall dirty and corroded). They replaced the ECU as well. I'm going to do a valve set too. I'll let you know what I find out when I work on it next. Cheers, Greg

Finally got down to work on this hoe again. After I replaced the air to air hose at the turbo I got an operator to stall it while I was under the hood. Boost blowing out of the intake gaskets, one gasket was hanging out. Pulled the necessary parts and intake off, all but one gasket were destroyed, half of one gasket was across the intake port on one cylinder, and half of the intake bolts were under torqued... Cleaned her up and replaced the gaskets. Runs like a top.. Very poor workmanship on the rebuild from Volvo. Just figured id let anyone who was interested know! Cheers, Greg

Was it a true Volvo reman? If it was it should have a tag that states so and there would be a 1 yr warranty on it.

I never installed the engine, didn't see a tag anywhere. The owner is checking into the issue. The company he is dealing with says they won't warranty the engine because they didn't install it... Something is fishy for sure! He would have been a lot better off just getting me to rebuild the original engine, live and learn I suppose...
