Hi i have a volvo l120e from 2006. Sometimes when i shift from reverse to forward i get an error that says shift solenoid error. If i turn the engine off then on again its no problem for a couple of hours. Any one that have any ideas what i should do? I have been checking the solenoids on right hand side of the machine and the seems to be ok. Is there some how i can test them? Ive talked to the volvo shop but they didnt kbow anything. I Think i need to buy a komatsu again Have a nice day!
These machines are pretty good at telling you when there is a bad shift solenoid but not good about telling you which one is bad. You can check each one with a ohm meter, pretty sure it should be around 26-27 ohms. And these solenoids are temperature sensitive, IE they will sometimes test good when cold and start shorting out (lower ohms) when brought up to temperature. also helpful to check ohms as soon as the code sets. It is helpful to use process of elimination in diagnosing them. Like if it always sets the code when you first put it in forward, then it has to be either the fwd solenoid or the second gear solenoid.(if in auto they start off in second-not first). Fwd, rev and 2nd solenoids are usually the first to go as they are used the most. You can also just swap the coils from the suspect coil and swap it with 4th and see if the problem goes away or moves(4th is the least used)
mr cowboys reply is spot on, but there is an easy way to determine which solenoid is failing, when error occurs use aps switch to switch to manual ie spanner mode, gear shift can only be done with shift lever now, it is likley that the fwd sol is the one, when fault occurs and in man, shift lever thru fwd gears 1,2,3,4 if you have no drive then fwd sol is faulty, if you have drive in 3 of the gears then it will be the one without drive probably 2nd, also check in rev as i have had both fwd and rev solenoids failing at same time, this will only happen when warm as solenoids start to break down with heat.
Thank you for the answer. Now i tested and it looks like the forward solenoid is broken. How do i know which solenoid i need to replace?
when looking at shift solenoid valve block you will see a bank of 3 solenoids on each side, fwd solenoid is the top left (nearest rear of machine), if you dont have a solenoid to replace it with swop it with 4th gear solenoid which is situated at bottom left until you get one, swop complete unit over ie valve assy and solenoid inc harness.
i figured it out this morning. I replaced it with a new one. Thank you for all the help!
