I been working on a it28 cat my custmor took the engine to a machine shop to have it rebuilt.they told him would put it together for $400 well he get it back & i put it back in while hooking up the wiring harnees i found they left half of the front cover bolts out.Well i put them back in so we cranked the engine friday well it started to pour oil out between the fuel pump & the oil cooler so i pull the oil cooler off today to see if they knocked the o rings out when they put the fuel pump on.Guess what they didnt put the o rings in & left one of the old one in witch was hard as a rock. So the custmor going to get the parts monday so i can finish it.This makes me wonder what else they left out or didnt do.

I think a tear down is in order... nothing like doing the initial start up to watch an oil level indicator appear in the side of the block. Did the leave half the bolts out on the main bearings too?

Sounds like for $400 you got an engine cleaning and paint job speacial! I agree with wrench-one, document everything. Good luck with it.

Oh a dupont overhaul, I know of a lot of overhauls where they replaced one scored sleeve and piston and not the other five, a rebuilt rearend that consisted of filing off the gouges on the ring and pinion and tightening up the bolts again that had come loose and charged the customer for a whole new differential assembly, how about the best one yet for a transmission rebuild where they only put one new bearing in and one used gear and never washed out the case and gave it a pressure washer and paint job and charged for a rebuilt tranny at 5 grand and left a 1/2 inch combination wrench inside the bottom of the case that went through the gears after bouncing up off the bottom of the transmission case in the first 100 miles? All the above were done by two shops in my area and ones unofficail motto is "we cheat everyone equally" You get what you pay for and only take it to someone you trust and then drop by often to see it apart and demand to have things explained as they go so you can see whats being done and also the used parts back afterwards for you to throw away or keep to help out your defense later if need be.

Been watching this thread and it brings back a bad memory.. Several years back a customer "price shopper" asked for a quote to build his 4 cyl. JD ....well i give him an idea about how much ..apparently I was too high .. Long story short the boys that built it would not stand behind it ..20 hours it develops a bad knock ..I go to lok at the machine and orange silicone was every where ..I pulled it down and a strip of silicone about the size of a golf pencil was lodged in a oil journal on one rod ...junk crank .. If people are not going to stand behind there name and there work find something else to do ..After all the best layed plans sometimes fail ...Thats what builds your reputation ..
