It seems like if there is an outbreak they shouldn't wait until 16 residents die before they decide to try to separate them. Maybe some of the healthy patients could be taken home for 2 or 3 weeks while they try to sort it out. It's just bad all around.

The nursing home/ extended care facilities are in a bad situation. Many of the people there, are in really bad shape already, bed ridden, on all kinds of immunosuppressant drugs. Likely if covid doesn't get them, they weren't making it long anyways. It doesn't make it less sad, but its not like the facilities have a lot of options. If you try to move the "well" ones, no one wants them because they might be already infected. No one wants to bring it over to their own facility, not to mention, some wouldn't survive the trip. These aren't people playing tennis and shuffleboard on the way to their yoga class- most of them are really sick, old people with lots of underlying/ terminal conditions already. Not people that are healthy enough to fight off covid. My grandmother is 102 and in a facility. She's still sharp in the mind, just can't see real well and can't take care of herself. She isn't allowed any visitors, no more communal meals. Its much like a prison, someone brings her meals in the room, but that's about it. As far as taking some of them "home", most of the ones in my grandmothers place no longer have any "home", the care facility is it.

Maybe this will be a wakeup to build more hospitals and care centers instead of cutting everything. My mom passed away in November in a long term care facility. She had a special room for the last month or so all to herself because they knew she was going soon. Most of the standard rooms were set up for 4 occupants. Just glad I got to go see her and talk to her before she went. It's really sad with people compared to animals. They said she had a really strong heart. She went 16 days without any solid food. It's got to be horrible now with this Covid 19 where a lot of places don't allow any visitors even if just to say goodbye.

Just a bad retirement home. My wife's father is in a retirement home in Edmonton, We've been locked out of the place for over a month already. No visitors, residents can't go out, they're not taking any chances at that place.

Partner works at a Capital Care facility in Edmonton and a good friend of hers is the administrator of one of the Good Samaritan long term care facilities. So far so good but they're taking lots of precautions. Anyone entering including staff has to have their temperature tested at the front door before they are allowed to go any further.
