having a problem with stalling with my 312b being told I have a priming pump that leaks a little and that may cause it to make the motor stall is this true or does I go deeper
If your priming/supply pump is leaking, your will be sucking air also.. So yes, it’s true.
If the priming pump is leaking you can really go no further diagnosing until you fix it. You do that, then move on. If a replacement doesn't fix the problem then diagnosis continues. That's how it works. If you want more details, post a Serial Number. There are a dozen different flavours of 312B
Welcome to the Forums cj! Glad to have you. BTW -moved this over to the excavator forum.

Were you aware that your machine is a grey market unoffical import to the US.? Finding parts for it could be difficult unless you have an original Parts Manual. Cat dealers have no information about it on their systems. Here is a link to a genuine OEM manual on eBay Does the fuel priming pump mount on th eside of the fuel injection pump, a bit like the illustration below.?
yes it mounts on the side of the injector pump side of motor that's it
Here is a parts breakdown for it.
If u notice, there’s a filter screen inside #8.. Pull the bolt out and see if #9 (Filter screen) is clogged..
really would like to know what the location of the primary fuel filter is located so far ho Penn has not told me where it is does anyone know the location im certain this is my problem with the stalling filter has never been changed to my knowledge please help me 312b cat excavator
do you know where the primary fuel filter is located on this 312b cat can't find it and it has never been changed share it will help with the stalling problem thanks
Just google it.. My search popped right up.. Says it’s located on the bottom of the tank..
See my previous comments regarding there being no information online and that you need a parts manual. I even linked one for sale on eBay.
For the location of the water separator take a look inside the RH rear access door. Additionally if you look underneath the fuel tank on the front RH corner you should find a drain tap. This is for draining the water & sediment, a procedure that is supposed to be done regularly. Try opening the tap, what comes out may just surprise you.
how do you get to it to change it ?
can you and should you remove bolt 9 and clean that filter ?
I know about the fuel water separator r3emove the plug to drain water almost nothing comes out
if it is in the tank how do you change it ?
Not “IN” the tank, “ON” the bottom of the tank.
Thanks for that I always call cat and they give me the part numbers
In that case it might be appropriate to disassemble it and find out why. Even if it contains no water you should get a steady flow of diesel out of it. The bottom of the spearator bowl is likely plugged with debris. At the same time replacing the filter element inside would also be appropriate. BTW the water separator assembly also contains the primary fuel filter. Regarding the fuel tank water/sediment drain you will likely find something like this if you look underneath the machine in the area of the fuel tank. It's quite possible nothing may come out when you open the valve. In that case you'll need to run a piece of stiff wire upwards through the tube and the valve #10 until the blockage is cleared. Absolutely. 100% certain it will have some sort of debris in it.
BTW before opening up the water separator you need to go under the tank and turn off the fuel supply using the valve #14 to the right of the drain in the illustration above.
