starter motor D4D Dozer

montman · 2015-07-07 18:23

Hi Just had the starter motor go bang ,when i took it off the dog on the end had gone missing that's what the big bang was as it destroyed itself . The starter still turns over and would work if it had the dog on it so my question is how many teeth dose the dog have on it and does any other starter motor fit or is there any one in the UK that breaks them so i could get a second hand one. I will try and get it rebuilt but need it for next week. The dozer is a 1974 vintage. Thanks

Call TC, I'm sure he'll have a couple in his boiler suit pocket, or perhaps a wood box in back of the hen house. Tony?

Oddly enough I always have 1 of these starter motors rebuilt ready to fit in my heap of "Handy Bits" the worry thing is what transmission style is this D4 as the junk that let fly can be an issue??? the starter bits are easy to find on the WEB or NON O.E. Dealers tctractors

Hi Tony the trans is power shift, i took the plug out of the bottom of the casing and could not find anything also had a magnetic telescopic thingy inside where the starter fits and in the plug hole but could not find anything. Would you be prepared to sell me your starter and have mine so you can get it rebuilt if i can not sort myself out as TIME is a big concern for me at the moment. PM me if you want [email protected]

Best be doing something about finding those pieces. Would take out the starter drive end housing in the process of losing the drive. Starter should be either a Delco Remy 42MT model or Prestolite Both use a twelve tooth pinion.

Hi update on starter took it to my local starter repair shop today and its not as difficult as i thought to get it fixed just needs a new pinion and a few other bits as the actual starter is good so will pick it up tomorrow. I can not find any of the broken pieces i can only think that it shattered into lots of little bits and hopefully will work there way down to the bottom where i can get them out of the plug hole but i could be wrong. This all started when they run it out of diesel and it would not prime up with the primer so tried to prime it by turning it over on stater although the starter pinion must have been on its way out so i will put new fuel filter full of fuel on it and fill the tank to the top with fuel first and then try it.

montman, the D4D is fitted with a priming pump also on the pump (3304) there is a bleed plug, well 2 if you want the full hit plus the spin on filter has a bleed valve, if you leave the throttle control in the shut off position and undo the fuel lines at the injectors, slowly fuel will purge through the lines all helped by a full fuel tank plus a few shots on the priming pump should soon start the engine, the bits that are now in the depths of Doom probably will not hurt on the powershift as there is nothing but dust to worry about, I hope things workout O.K. for you . tctractors

Hi TC Thanks for the info i tried it with the primer pump that's on the pump with the bleed valve open on the filter housing but would not come through, i will try it the way you suggest next time after i have fitted the starter back on and hopefully it will be back working.

I would get a Delco Remy geared starter motor.. Far lighter and a bit smaller then the old direct drive type..

Have you actually had experience with using the Delco gear reduction starter? My local rebuilder is telling me he sees a preference for the older USA built 40MT direct drive units since everything is now coming out of China.

I have one on my 922 loader... Works like a champion...

picked up the starter yesterday they had to put a new armature in it as well,it had bent the shaft just a little but so that the pinion would not slide on it so new armature plus pinion plus a few other bits cost £120 not bad i thought. Fitted it today bled the fuel through as TC said and back dozing again panic over.
