Hello guys im wondering if i can put strobes (orange) in my trucks headlights and use my top markerlights as strobes .i was thinking bout hideaways. will i be vialating the law.i shouldent becouse im going to be hauling hay which will be kind of wide. can someone give me some links for some strobe setups an kits i should look at to buy i want the strobes to last. and can someone tell me the rules on using the strobes
Not sure if there are laws controlling strobe use there but I did ask a Missouri officer about that once and he said yes , he thought it would be fine ,anything you do to warn someone or be more visible was fine . Farm operations fall under different regs in Missouri ,Far more relaxed .
ok thank you sir . im here in kentucky btw
Additional lights can be used if you are permitted and have the proper signage for oversize loads. However you might run into some trouble convincing the DOT that your load is not "reduce able". I don't think you can get away with any flashing lights without some kind of special hazard. If you are just talking about local stuff on back roads, you will probably be fine.
http://www.lrc.ky.gov/krs/189-00/043.pdf Code: 189.043 Flashing white or amber lights to warn of traffic hazard permitted. Notwithstanding any other provisions against the use of flashing lights, any vehicle may be equipped with lamps which may be used for the purpose of warning the operators of other vehicles of the presence of a vehicular traffic hazard requiring the exercise of unusual care in approaching, overtaking or passing and when so equipped may display such warning in addition to any other warning signals required by law. The lamps used to display such warning to the front shall be mounted at the same level and as widely spaced laterally as practicable, and shall display simultaneously flashing white or amber lights, or any shade of color between white and amber. The lamps used to display such warning to the rear shall be mounted at the same level and as widely spaced laterally as practicable, and shall show simultaneously flashing amber or red lights, or any shade of color between amber and red. These warning lights shall be visible from a distance of not less than fifteen hundred (1,500) feet under normal atmospheric conditions at night. You'll probably want to read the rest of the warning light sections; KRS 189.910 to 189.950 to determine if there are any further restrictions to color use. It does say white is permitted 189.043, but that may only be in context to what colors are to be used for warnings. You may find that flashing white lights may be restricted to use by emergency vehicles (cops, fire, ambulance) I only tag that on in the event you come across a set of white strobes for a price you may not be able to pass up on. I'd also take note of the fact it says simultaneously flashing lights-Probably want to check the manual of the strobes to see if flash pattern can be altered (again, Emergency vehicles being a relatively closed market, there are probably units that are single pattern for departmental cost savings). In NY, we are prohibited from using the headlights as warning lights in any manner, including the addition of strobes. Check your state law regarding that. I can also tell you the cab marker lights won't disperse the heat fast enough, your lenses will melt. I have a friend who tried it and smoked his markers. Why not use LEDs? They use less power, are brighter and don't throw heat. A small almost unnoticeable light can throw a lot of warning out there.
