Stupid Question – Power Loss / Pump rebuild question

John Strange ยท 2026-06-27 20:17

Sorry it's my first skid steer lol, I've got a 2014 CAT 299D, and it felt like it lost power today, the engine is strong so I'm going to change the hydraulic fluid and filter as it's time anyways. It got me thinking though, how do you know when your skid steer is losing power and how long do you expect it to last before you need to rebuild the engine or rebuild the hydraulic pump? Given it's pre DEF at some point it'll be an engine rebuild or a pump rebuild, the question is when and how many hours does it usually last?

All depends on how it was used and most importantly maintained. Most Skids start costing significant money after 3k hours but I have seen a few with 5k hours that looked great and ran exceptionally well.

it was low on fluid, change the fluid and it was clean and now she's happy and back to full power.

Don't throw the old filter away. Cut it open and inspect the filter media for particles. This VIDEO is the best i have seen to illustrate how to do it. You don't necessarily need a filter cutter BTW, a hacksaw works just as well. Simply cut out a section of filter media as far away as possible from the saw cuts.

yep, that's on the list today, fluid change / filter change, now to do oil / filter change.

Well when you pack clay and sand so heavily behind the sprockets the machine tends to bog, it's quite muddy here never had that issue before..
