T250 Starter Issues

Filtrexx ยท 2016-02-26 08:12

Hello I'm having some starter issues with my Bobcat T250. We've had the battery replaced once already. We will put it in the start position and will only get "click click click" but if jump from the nut to the starter with a screwdriver in the back of the Bobcat she will (and use to) start all the time. Since the battery has been replaced she would start with the switch no problem but one week in a we are already having problems starting. My question is with a multimeter how do i go by checking for alternator problems? And how do i go by checking for starter problems? Any observations or advice is appreciated since our production is at standstill do to this issue. I can posts photos by request. Thank you again for any advice given!

That could be bad solenoid contacts. Do you get a big spark or a little spark when you start it with a screwdriver? Are you jumping the big nut to a small nut or another big nut? Hold your screwdriver by the tip and use the handle end of your screwdriver and hit the starter while somebody holds the key to start, if that starts it then it's most likely the contacts. A new battery won't fix the starter. If it runs and the battery doesn't die, then the alternator is fine, you should have at least 13.5 volts at the battery when running. You can usually take the solenoid apart and scrape or file the contacts clean to get a little more use of them, until you can get new contacts. It could also be too much resistance in the start circuit, or no signal to the starter. Check the small wire(s?) on the solenoid for voltage when the key is at start.

swap out the starter relay with another relay from a working circuit. :drinkup

i've figured out, over the years, most starter problems aren't really starter problems. bad batteries, bad cable connections, or relays are the problem. if i have 100 calls for "no start" condition, there may be 1 that actually needs a starter, the starter may be burned up because of another problem, ie: no fuel, or a bad fuel solenoid. :drinkup
