Adjusted the tracks today - one side took grease just fine. The other side was very very stubborn. I was able to get it adjusted with the help of a small sledge and a few pumps and keep repeating that. It moved about and its pretty close to being perfect. What would be causing this, and what will I need to do to fix it? It took a lot of hammering and a few very difficult pumps with the grease gun each time to get a tiny bit of movement. I checked the zerk and it was not plugged and looked new. So, what's the procedure to make it easier or fix this?
The greese zerk is threaded into another fitting which is a check valve. If you are lucky the check valve is clogged with hard grease and can be removed and cleaned. Other wise you will need to remove the adjuster cylinder and take it apart to see what is going on. Probably have to break the track to do that. Is the cylinder tube and rod straight ? You should be able to put a pipe wrench on the exposed rod and turn it to see if it is straight. One end of that rod sits in the cupped end of the short piston inside the cylinder and the other end fits into the spring end that is in that track frame enclosure. It should be free to rotate unless you have your track really tight so there is lots of spring pressure. Rotating the rod may be hard on the seal at the end of the cylinder tube. It is there to keep dirt out.
