Well, sometimes it responds and sometimes it doesn't. Seems to be worse when the weather or machine is cold. It has three steering modes, and none seem to be any better or worse than the other. (crab, straight and opposite steer) Any thoughts?
im gonna guess the valve is sticking or the cylinder is bypassing. pull a hose off the cylinder to check it. be careful of oil shooting out of the hose or cylinder.
My experience with this problem has frequently been a connection issue at the Steer Mode Select Valve. When in 4-wheel steer and the rear steering is messing up, does the front steering work ok? If the temperature is a factor, bobb is is on it with the valve/cylinder issue. If the Front Steer always functions properly when in 4-wheel steer, then it is more likely the valve. Check the easy stuff first like switch connections etc. In Front Steer Only, the oil is not sent to the Rear Steer Cylinder. In 4-wheel Crab and 4-wheel Coordinated (Circle) modes, oil flows through both the front and the rear steer cylinders. It must flow freely. If not, then both front and rear steering will be affected. If your front axle steering is not affected when in 4-wheel steer, then the rear cylinder is not obstructing oil flow. Rarely will a cylinder bypass oil when it is cold and not when it is hot. Here is the oil path when in Front Wheel Only Steer: Here is the oil path when in 4-Wheel Steer: Here is the location of the Steer Mode Select Valve: When the steering is acting up, have a voltmeter or a test light handy to see if there is power at the steer mode select valve. If not, then trace the circuit back to the Selector Switch to find where the signal drops out. If indeed it is a sticking when cold valve, try applying a heat source to the steer select valve. If the problem stops then the question is answered. Take the valve apart and clean. Reseal kits are available.
Here is the complete hydraulic portion of the Steering Circuit:
Thanks Bobb and Voodoo for all the info... I got a new truck a week or so ago and haven't had a chance to look at this machine, but I really need to... Last week I used it several times and basically couldn't the rear steer to work at all. Will try to try your suggestions (despite my limited mechanical/electrical abilities) and come back with questions. Again, thanks for your trouble... Steve
Has anyone had an issue with coordinated steering being the only option that doesn't work. Front steer and crab steering work but not circle. I have replaced the steering mode switch without success. Thanks in advance.
I am having this problem right now. Machine came to me as a bit of an electrical basket case and after several electrical repairs its one of the last things that's consistently inoperative. Old selector switch was burned up, now replaced with new OEM part, still steers front wheels only in 2WS and 4WS but rear steers fine in crab mode. Any ideas?
