We've always had in house flaggers or traffic control. After 27 years around them, I have to ask are your flaggers crazy. Im told it's the same everywhere. We get flaggers sometimes from one of our sub contractors. They are all retired men. They are great. They ask what you want, then they do it. No drama. No crazy. I used to think it was just because they were women but our DOT coordinator is a woman and she's just like one of thr boys
The flangers crazy union has many members and the crap they get away with, would land us all in front of a judge or an HR committee. Think it’s worse if they are a crew. Think wanna be mafiosos with bright vests but dull brains .
This is my traffic control:
Traffic control is a licence to print money. Cones are $1.50 a day each rental plus layout and uplift charges. Signage and Traffic lights considerably more. The speed limit they set is enforceable so even after the work has been completed and these numb nut "forget" to pick up a sign, that then becomes the legal speed limit. You then travel bloody miles until the next proper sign, can't help wonder if there's some kick backs involved.
We buy cones or candles by the case. $55 per candle. We have to submit a sign plan as part of a job bid. As a foreman, I have to take DOT sign course every 3 years. Signs have to be inspected 3 times a day including weekends. If there is no one working, men working and flagger signs are to be covered or turned.
That's the way I should be unfortunately not here
We had some ‘traffic controllers’ here that actually got in ‘trouble’ as they were dancing around while holding signs… Hard to tell what the actual construction project was all about!
I see mostly young ladies. It’s a good summer gig and they can stack some paper. The prevailing Flagman THR, North of the 63, is like $50.62. Then $75 per-diem & lodging if the job site is more than 62 road miles from FAI. When the season is over, they can go back to dancing, work the coffee shop during pumpkin spice season, go back to college, work the ski resort, sell pictures of their starfish on OF, whatever. A know a couple gals that make good bank trimming weed during the winter.
That seems to be the norm. Maybe standing on the road on hot asphalt does it to them. Mostly it's the drama. On provincial jobs DOT wants daily field level hazard acessment cards done and read out to the crew. Like a daily tool box talk. City does not look for that stuff. One of the flaggers called and reported me to the office because I wasn't having daily meetings
