trailer behind a 20ton loader

just wondering if anybody has had any experiance with putting a trailer behind a loader, i'm looking at buying a 20 ton sized loader and want to tow a trailer around behind it, it won't be taking that much weight, may be 3 ton at the most, i'll make the trailer myself and base it on a dog trailer arangement so there is no weight transfered to the hitch and also has anyone put a air system on a loader, i want to run air brakes to the trailer. cheers in advance :drinkup Marty

I didn't know that you could get 3 ton air brake axles. With a 20 ton loader I think I'd put at least 1/2 ton on the loader. As far as air on a loader, alot of the older loaders had air brakes in them from the factory, stuff like case w18b's and so on

We pull crushing trailers behind loaders all the time, Marty. A 3 tonne trailer behind a 20 tonne loader, you wouldn't even know it was there. We pull 16 & 20 tonnes behind 18 tonne loaders and I used to pull 24 tonnes behind an old Hough 60, which only weighed about 13 tonnes. I did have air set up on that to operate the air brakes on the crusher trailer. I might add that it is fairly flat around here, but even in hilly country you shouldn't have any problems with that weight ratio. If the loader has air, it would be fairly simmple to fit an air brake control valve for the trailer brakes, just to be on the safe side. RnR.

thanks stumpy, the back end of it won't have any weight problem, it'll have a set of lewis rippers hanging of the back of it, main reason for the dog trailer configuration, checked with lewis and with volvo (have basically decided on a L120C or a L150D) and it'll be fine to pull it. cheers rocks, with that info i can beef up the trailer a bit and might be able to do a bit more with it then i thought, its fairly flat around here as well only a few rolling hills here and there. How are things looking over in crow eating country at the moment

Really good, Marty. The season has got away to an excellent start, we have had good rains and the cockies are happy, which is good for us, because they are the major part of our business. RnR.

yeah same here, thats the main reason for buying this loader, the cockies are bit cashed up an are wanting a bit of work done
