Hi. Few months ago bought this Volvo as in project condition. Lot of things to fix. Next in turn was to remove left final drive with travel motor and investigate why oil leaks directly out. Was expected that should be OK with replacing the floating seal. First noticeable thing was that I could see inner bearing from the gab between the final drive and motor part where the floating seal should be located. Opened front side planetary gears and there all was OK, lot of dirt but no visible wear or damages. Removed the upper part of the hub, and in picture below you can see what was found. Quite a mess. No signs of floating seal except those pieces of o-ring. Bearing was one piece before opening. Now the question is that do I have badly worn seats for toric rings (o-rings) of floating seal. Should there be some protecting "lip" for floating seal? Could not find proper picture or drawing of this position. And dont be worried, lot of dirt around but all hydraulics properly plugged and everything will be properly cleaned if this becomes worth of it...
I use a small ID wire wheel on a die grinder to get the rust and scale off. That "lip" does nothing for sealing, it just holds the o-ring in place for assembly. As long as the bottom and outer wall of the opening are smooth, she'll seal right up. Getting the pre load on that bearing is more important than anything else.
Good day See attached it may say 160C but it is extracted from 210C. Kind regards Uffex
Good day Go carefully those slippers don't offer too much protection. Kind regards Uffex
Thanks. Can you clarify this pre load? With the lip I mean floating seal can be seen from outer world. There is lets say 5-10mm (~1/4" - 1/2") gap between travel motor side and gear side.
Those are not my shoes, my father visited in the garage while I was taking pictures... Always wearing safety boots when working.
