Volvo used to have rigid haul trucks in there range, both from Kockum and Euclid all part of VME at the time. I think Volvo sold out its shares in Euclid to Hitachi, and that was the end of there rigids!

In years 1986-1987 my company bought 56 (yes, fiftysix) of the Volvo 442C trucks - with 35 short ton payload. Nice little machines, very agile, very simple design - for example, no rear suspension, rear axle bolted to the frame, one-cylinder hoist, etc. - with their small size they were the best solution for underground jobs. 40 of them were working in Iraq on a large hydroelectric project, in a joint-venture job with a Turkish company using the same-capacity Komatsus. We did the underground works - big tunnels and large turbine and transformer halls, the Turks did the dam. Both were using a road tunnel to move between the two sides of a mountain - our Volvos passing each other without a problem, the Turks have had to place at each entrance a radio man, his only task was to stop any other truck from entering from the opposite direction when a Komatsu was coming thru. In theory, Komatsus were faster, with a bigger body, etc., but our little old-fashioned Volvos moved more rock and gravel per truck per hour.
