Got an older Volvo loader , runs great, was hesitant to go into gear sometimes. Giving it throttle and i would then go . Stay good whole day , shifts through all the gears perfect ... Let it sit same thing, changed tranny filter, and suction screen on bottom of tranny, put new oil premium 30wt non detergent . Now can get it to engage forward or reverse... Loader is L120c . and ideas before days of trouble shooting would be grateful! loader located in east texas 15k hours
I think you mean can't get it to engage forward and reverse... What trans. oil does it call for? Haven't seen 30wt non detergent specified too often. Usually something like Hy-tran, TO-4 or ATF. Have read where the specific type of oil and weight can make a huge difference. Maybe be a torque converter issue like a leak too.
I did atf and to4. But with high hours and warm temperatures in texas , good heavy duty 30wt works well in out tranny equipment.. I'm wondering a leak, because I could get to engage forward or reverse with high rpms, but now nothing.. wondering if there is a relief valve somewhere on converter or tranny
What does the manual call for? May need to do some pressure tests to look for a leak.
I know nothing of volvo loaders, but i have Been caught out before with other machines doing the exact same thing. Usually changing oil and filters on high hour machine and wont self prime when the pump is mounted above oil level. You can try to prime pump but my guess is a worn out pump. Could also be a suction leak.
I'm hoping just a air leak of some sort, we gonna do a pressure test after getting the right fittings couplers, the pump is internal unfortunately
We gonna do pressure test next, waiting on the gages.. then go to next step
FYI L120C Oil pressure, at high idling speed Main pressure 1.37–1.58 MPa (13.7–15.8 bar) (199–229 psi) Clutch pressure, gears 1 – 4, F – R 1.37–1.58 MPa (13.7–15.8 bar) (199–229 psi) Torque converter pressure, out 0.20– 0.50 MPa (2.0 – 5.0 bar) (29 – 73 psi) Lubricating oil pressure 0.16–0.22 MPa (1.6–2.2 bar) (23–32 psi) H on the attached is main pressure check point.
Your bottom box is full, to the check plug? That trans should have 2 fluid levels. One with the dipstick that's for hydraulic control which uses DEXRON, the other is the gearbox on the bottom which uses SAE 30 in warmer climates. On the back of the trans is a pipe plug , that needs to be full of oil. It should be in line with or just above the companion flange centerline. Some models had a side mounted dipstick as shown. I attached a "description" of your trans for reference. Good luck.
after checking pressures, and help from yall in this forum, we found 0 pressure to the ports, blew air compresser into the dipstick from tranny , after few minutes , finally oil came out! dam air pockup in the scavage pump i guess..... now shifts into gear forward and reverse no issues!!
Whatever works on them old girls.
