Life always throws curves, put a little more windshield time in today. Drove to Yakima-278 round trip. Looked at this 1974 with A Model Cat, A DITA that had been installed back in time to replace the 3406 pre-cup. 13 speed with a frame extension that wasn't to Par. I could see where it originally had torsion bar suspension, Reyco spring now. But all easily repairable with/and or 8 bag installed. Very nice cab/hood/grille no cracks or worn edges on hood or cab. Interior really only needs a headliner, dash & door panels in very good condition with zero holes drilled. Twin air cleaners, has jakes, no oil in radiator, oil pressure cold 58 psi @ 78 ambient. Gave him a deposit and should pickup next Sunday morning 27th my birthday. Good thing is my friend Steve has 3 900's he picked up this last fall all with no titles just parts trucks. *
400 horsepower A Model Cat
All right! Looks good from here.
Items to replace. All air lines and fuel hoses, install plastic, install air dryer replace air valves. Repair/replace wiring under hood and to rear. Replace hydraulic assist power steering with Ross power box, already have two available. Replace steer axle 11 leaf springs with 3 leaf easy ride & u-bolts. Replace rubber mounted crank damper with viscous. Run overheads, drop pan check mains/rods, replace bearings. Check advance/pump timing. Replace all coolant hoses. Replace window regulators, both are tired because typical worn out chain drive. Replace headliner & windshield glass/gasket. Replace/repair exhaust system, originally twin stacks probably put twins back. Clean/repair frame {steel}, install Kenworth 8 bag, have two choices of drive axles. Has old 95 or 12513 speed, might just install the late model 10 spd I have. Check/replace clutch at same time. Replace right side fuel tank. Replace/repair all rear brakes, has no front brakes from factory. Repaint frame black, cab with company white/charcoal metallic fenders/roof cap. * leaving stock visor, replace bumper with stock unit for era, no new age crap Tired of seeing drop visors and snow plow bumpers. Enough work above to keep busy for a day or two.
Looks really nicely preserved & looked after. Used to travel through Yakima a fair bit; real nice dry climate for preservation!
Tanks need minimal work, Really Clean and 8bag would set that off NICELY against the 3 leak Steer. Still has that Vertical Throttle pedal but manageable. Project to Sell or play with?
Right side tank will be replaced, along with tank straps. I will probably rework throttle pedal. I'm in half with the boss, he buys the parts I do the work, split it if sold later. It's actually a company toy truck.
This truck came from Montana.
"hydraulic assist steering" I assume that is that ****** garrison with cylinder mounted bracket under cab/behind tank? '
What your talking/describing is {Vickers Power ram}. This is Vickers also, but the hydraulic signal is built into draglink using a cylinder mounted steer axle and tie rod.
one step up from the "air-o-matic" dad had on his '70 kw
Rebuilt the Rod ends of the Vickers units on Several Trucks. Cups and Ball would wear funny after Grease was forgotten or Boots went to hell, Preload Springs would just give up, Still have the BIG Straight Slot drive socket to adjust those.
Parts for those are not available.
It would appear after having Nige check Ser# Arr# the 3406A model in it is a early one for a 400 DITA with a AR# of 9N-0003, but not really surprised.
Happy birthday TS good travels on pick up today.
Agree, Have Great Day TS, safe transit.
Left at 7:00am, spent 1.2 hours swapping steer tires and getting hooked up. Window in right steer oil cover broke out when checking hub oil. Screws came out of retaining ring so left what was left of old window in place, and cut a window out of clear plastic, screwed ring back down poked a small hole for vent--never leaked. Ran 60 all the way back, stopped and checked three times. * Wheel base is 255" at this time.
255 will be just around where ours sits. If I Measured clean enough Blue is 260-265
Was argued with as to How much More Massive Blue was than a Pickup Truck, guy on RV Forum. Sent him These: End of PU bed is about even to Blue WB. Taller yes, had ours been a Super Crew, the drive axle would have been on Blue’s WB.
Old joke around the Rust belt about Truck Drivers, old Crabby Driver is told his truck will not fit where he needs to put it, looks at the Scoffer, tells him just another Volkswagon as to maneuvering. He Grinned adding every Truck is Part VW, and Mercedes and Cadillac or any other on the road, also by heritage part Ocean Liner or Scrapped Aircraft, hard not to put them where already been.
Funny thing about long WB, that was started as a west coast/pacific northwest thing. For years a long WB past the rockies was 230, the further east it dropped to 200.
Just big pickups is all a class eight is anymore and has been for years now. All burning that high priced diesel, I remember when the excuse to have a diesel pickup was cheaper fuel, hasn't been that for a long time. * I will probably do several shortcuts on this truck just to get it done. Just another truck.
You are not a man of shortcuts, you are a Craftsman at building trucks and engines. I am looking forward to seeing what you are going to do to this one.
I'll fix what needs fixing to a point, but I'm not going to resurrect it from front back. It will be useable with no bling.
So far--it's been a major electrical changeover from series parallel 24 volt, to 12volt starting system. Not a bit of starting system wiring is/was usable. All new cables 2/0 because using a Delco 8200302 high torque gear reduction starter uses way less AMP's, don't need 3 to 4/0 cables. New batteries, starter, cables, lugs, P-clamps, and system shutoff switches. Trouble is this truck had a 3406 prechamber when originally built using a ignition switch plus a two position glow plug starter switch which someone did a lousy job of bypassing. So many hours correcting old buffoonery, I think the guy who did it had a beard. s-----
Been thru all but the SP switch 12/24 stuff. Loads of Wiring Patches fixed. Gets old fast!!
