I need a 3304 complete engine. What arrangement numbers will work? Also, if any one knows of one available please let me know.

It doesn't really work like that. Shop around for what's available, post the arrangement numbers here and we can tell you how close the match is.

I take it your engine rebuild has gone up **** creek then ..? HeavyEquipmentForums Ideally for your machine (assuming S/N is 21Z03956) either 5C-8965 or 7N-2330 will drop straight in. As CM said anything else you find post up an engine Serial or Arrangement Number and someone will be able to tell you how much it will need changing to fit your 963

Turns out the guy has done nothing but pull the old engine. He quoted me14k to rebuild with new turbo and rebuilt fuel system. More than what I want to spend!

Long way away unfortunately. Cylinder head, pistons, flywheel & housing, turbo, fuel inj pump are all different and that's just for starters. If you're wanting it to get a cylinder block and crank to rebuild your existing engine it would work but otherwise it would be a major job to convert it so that it will fit your 963.

Ok, I'll keep looking. I talked to a guy today that said even the same arrangement numbers can differ, and that you need to compare serial numbers a well.

That's not totally correct. The only possible difference between Arrangement Numbers is that if they are improved over the years certain individual parts may change. It's called the Change Level and starts at 00, then 01, 02, etc. So if you have 2 engines with the same Arrangement Number but different Change Levels they will interchange as complete assemblies even if certain minor parts between the two engines might be slightly different. As an example the latest version of the 7N-2330 Arrangement Number that fits your particular 963 is currently at Change Level 24....

If you have the original engine, maybe you can get a rebuild cost from a more reputable mechanic/shop. The engine may have been way over this guys head or he doesn't have time but instead of saying so, just quoted a high price hoping it was over your budget? Wouldn't hurt to get a second opinion and I certainly wouldn't pay the first guy first much, if any, for taking so darn long and not doing anything. He at least could have kept you in the loop about what was going on.

If it turns out you can find a engine worth installing, it will take some coin to first buy it, then to ship it and still you have a unheard/un-witnessed engine as to longevity. I was a wrench for over 25 years commercially, we had customers determined to save $$ by buying used or failing to understand every extra dollar placed towards used exchange machinery most times is thrown away on indeterminate failure after short runs. In my history they were money ahead to pay for full overhauls than to piece meal their machines with someone elses' worn out discards. I live that definition currently with a antique Allis I cannot buy a great deal of repair parts for so I live in the wasteful world of old junk piece togethers.

I would tend to agree with DMiller. There is often a reason why the engine is for sale, and it might not be a good one! Did the original machine get abused all it's life and it just happens the engine is not the major component that caused the machine to end up in the scrap yard? Sure some times the machine was well cared for then the face fell in on the front of the loader in the pit so engine might be perfect. Guess one has to find the engine and find out what the total cost including shipping and parts and labor to adapt it to you application. Say you can find a "good used" engine for $9,000.00 and then you have to pay shipping of $1,000.00 then it takes another $2,000.00 in parts, gaskets and labor to get it set up to fit your machine. You now have a $12,000.00 engine with used Turbo, used fuel system, used everything. Those prices might be way high and you might get lucky and find one that will fit in with only changing a couple minor parts but even if you find one 10 miles away for $7,000.00 it's still a gamble. And even if you buy it from the most honest guy in the world who will warranty it for a year, if it fails you still have to do the work all over again to replace it if the guy has another one!
