Thanks guys for your answer. The reason I ask is we have a local company selling Kubota excavators, they have a full yard of the things. When I was talking to the saleperson he told me the company gets them direct from the factory, but they are not a dealer or are associated with Kubota in any form. Has anyone ever heard of this before? Are the company parallel importing the machines direct from the factory?

A dealer that gets a blow out deal on 100 units but only sells 60 in their market may "resell" the extra 40 to somebody else at a slight mark up (may be under cost that the authorized dealer in that market can purchase his inventory). May be good deal for end user. But it sucks to be the legit dealer and have to take on the added costs of a fancy building, signs, training, parts inventory, support, etc. Fine print probably forbids dealer from doing that, but if he moves enough iron, the sales guy who handles his account will look the other way.

Some Japanese companies are compartmentalized, the domestic sales manager has no hesitation to move a few container loads to a customer in Japan, gets his numbers up, and messes with his competition which is the international sales manager... where they go after they leave the factory is not his problem, and thus is born a fleet of grey market machines.... delivery is taken at the port docks and the "domestic" customer happily ships them overseas.
