won’t start

tailfeathers farm · 2026-04-11 19:51

My 289c will not start without help (starter fluid) I use 2 cycle gas. Runs like champ once started. no abnormal smoke, good power. History, 3000 hours, new injectors. Tested glow plugs, compression 400 across all 4. Haven't gaped the valves or checked the timing yet. Don't see a crank speed sensor, does it have one? Ideas compact guys?

Welcome to the forum tailfeathers. There's a weath of knowledge here but the Cat guys will want your machine serial number in order to give the proper assistance.

If engine speed for cranking is too low they will have hard time to start. Question, how did you test the glow plugs. Have the fuel filters been changed, has the filter head been disassembled and all elbows cleaned out? Could it be sucking in a little air between shutdowns causing hard start. Have the valves ever been reset at 3000 hours. Could be multiple small things adding up to a no start. Once running all is good is what you have said. I have the schematics that Nige sent me but there is more than one so post your serial number. Simon C

It does. It also has a camshaft speed sensor mounted on the back of the HP fuel pump if it is the one I’m thinking of. As above. Post a Serial Number. The electrical schematic may have all the answers. Another thing. Post photos of the instrument panel in the top RH corner of the cab. You may be able to access Diagnostic Codes with it.
