Tony5.7 ยท 2020-06-10 18:19

I've been working on a JD 16C LC and i replaced a key switch but it still doesnt start, you turn the keyswitch and lights and everything comes on and you hear a loud click but doesnt crank. Any suggestions to try?

Check connection at starter, battery and master switch. If that all checks good, try to bar the engine over by hand. Might have a cylinder full of fluid.

It cranks over if you jump the starter solenoid posts so it cranks over like that but just not with the key switch

I would look at the L strap from the starter solenoid to the armature. Sometimes they get loose. Loosen it up and retighten it to promote good contact. You said you heard a loud click. That's where I'd be looking

A loud click at key on, or a loud click in the crank position?

    Loud click at key one

But no click in crank position? This might sound silly, is your hour meter running with key on, engine off?

If the hour meter is turned on? And yea theres a click when you turn key to on position but then you get nothing when you try to start the machine

That would be your master or accessory relay. There should be a safety relay. They usually look like some deformed disc . Make sure that is getting powered through the crank position of your key switch. BTW, have you ruled out your ignition switch as not being defective? Perhaps it's a will fit, but not 100% correct?

Yup, the switch is brand new on it. I'll try that and see if it gets me closer to figuring this out

New doesn't always mean good, even when purchasing from the dealer.

Would the one with the two big wires going to it would be the master relay?

  12. #12funwithfuel2020-06-11 13:00

Yep, that big gold booger. That's the safety relay. It disallows cranking while the engine is running. That's why you gotta make absolutely sure there is no unwanted signal from the alternator or ignition circuit. Typically, I speak in generalization. I have no direct experience with deere.

MG2361 is the guy for Deere info.

  14. #14Tony5.72020-06-11 13:14

How would you go about checking for unwanted signals.

  15. #15funwithfuel2020-06-11 13:17

That's why I asked about the hour meter. If its spinning without the engine running, odds are a possible alternator problem, bad ignition switch and the list goes on. Let's start at the beginning. Why did you replace the ignition switch?

So i started working with an excavating company and they were going around showing me all the problems their machines had and they told me that one just needed an ignition switch, because when you turn the switch all the dash lights come on and everything works like its supposed it just doesn't want to send the signal to crank

  17. #17funwithfuel2020-06-11 13:23

Have they got the service manual for the machine, or online access to service literature?

  18. #18Tony5.72020-06-11 13:35

They have the technical manual for it but ive already looked through it and it didnt help me any

  19. #19funwithfuel2020-06-11 14:11

So, no schematics, only descriptions of how things work?

  20. #20Tony5.72020-06-11 14:17

    Yup pretty much

  21. #21Tony5.72020-06-11 16:04

So i had it working like its supposed to it just out of no where started working but then it stopped again. Is there maybe a safety switch under the seat?

  22. #22funwithfuel2020-06-11 16:17

Not to my knowledge. We're going to have to hit up MG2361. He knows the secret handshake.

  23. #23mg23612020-06-12 05:39

You need to tell them to get the Operation and Test manual TM1932. That has all the schematics. The relay in the picture in post #12 is the battery disconnect relay, not a safety relay. The starter relay is in the battery box area (see picture). The safety relay (which prevents cranking with engine running) is behind the seat under the plastic. All those relays are the same so you can swap them to test.
