Your float balls and springs have rusted up, a common item on those, Case has a complete kit to replace those items, it can be done with the valve still in the machine but it is not fun, there is a detent piece that screws into the end of the spool be careful when installing the new one, use a little blue loctite and do not over tighten it.

Here should be a bit of information that will help it's out of the online parts book for a 1840: The part melben is referring to is item #17 and the balls and springs are items #16 and #17 And here is the link to the page that was cropped out of: https://partstore.casece.com/us/parts-search.html#epc::mr57484ar412427 And for anyone looking for parts information on a Case : https://partstore.casece.com/us/parts-search.html#epc::model_find Note if it is a farm machine like a Case/IH tractor use this site: https://partstore.caseih.com/us/parts-search.html#epc::model_find That site even has the old Farmall tractors parts books!

KS, Thank you, pics are great, The ability to transfer files is something I am not adept at, if the gentleman is reading this that said his comes out of detent hard, He may have some success removing one of the little caps and trying to get some lube in, just be careful, a spring and ball can come out if the one on the low side of the end cap is removed.
